The New England Patriots’ unprecedented success is tied to their head coach, Bill Belichick, who changed the whole losing streak of the team while assisting them in 11 straight playoff appearances. Nevertheless, soon after losing his best weapon, Tom Brady, his success rate began to fall dramatically, putting his name on the list of the most defeated coaches in the NFL.
Though the Patriots already locked him up with a contract extension deal, rumors once tried to add his name to the Washington Commanders. Even so, it didn’t take long to close all the doors to the gossip.
Commanders squash Belichick trade speculation
Dan Snyder’s era in Washington is already over, wrapping up a controversy-filled tenure. As soon as Josh Harris took over the place of Snyder as the Commander’s owner, he conveyed his wish to change the “culture” of the franchise.
Changing the culture of the organization is not a piece of cake where the team’s managerial and coaching personnel are also related. Hence, speculations arose about whether they might attempt to trade for Belichick in 2024.
Before it added another form of tension among fans and more rumors, JP Finley came out to find the root of the trade. That being said, his inquiry turned up nothing more than a rumor.
“Checked in with a few people and there’s “no truth” to the future Belichick and Washington speculation that’s been thrown around. Has not been discussed,” he wrote on X.
Under their current head coach Ron Rivera, the Commanders now sit at 3-5, while Belichick’s team sits at the bottom of the AFC division with a 2-6 record. However, this move could add depth and almost two decades of experience in the Commanders’ defense by dint of Belichick, who is mostly known for his defensive schemes.
Bill Belichick signed a multiyear deal with the Patriots in the offseason
The losing pattern of the Patriots under Bill Belichick’s guidance, put the head coach in the hot seat. Even it was previously reported that Kraft would obviously try to get rid of the losing streak and the 71-year-old as soon as possible.
Evidently, Kraft was much disappointed with his team’s consecutive failure. Yet, before seeing the losing runs, the owner secured Belichick’s job with the Patriots silently during this offseason, per NFL.com.
The details of the contract were not made public, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, though, the reporter assumed it to be a long-term one.
“His contract [is] one of the most closely held secrets in New England. That said, I think it’s fair to say there was some, at least, uncertainty or intrigue surrounding him. Now, contractually, he is locked up long-term.”
Under these adverse circumstances, the coach of the Patriots eventually put his name on the list of NFL coaches with 300 victories. The age-defying coach once expressed an eagerness to claim the title from Fon Shula as the NFL’s all-time winningest head coach.
Do you think he can end up achieving it?
