Conor McGregor joins Jake Gyllenhaal to promote debut film ‘Roadhouse’, unveils new poster and release date

Conor McGregor is set to make his highly anticipated return on June 29 against Michael Chandler. However, as of now, neither the UFC nor Dana White has officially confirmed the fight between McGregor and Chandler.

McGregor announced the fight against Chandler through a video post on social media on New Year’s Eve of 2024. This fight marks McGregor’s return to the octagon after his unfortunate leg break against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, which resulted in a 1-2 record in their rivalry.

Conor McGregor is set to make his Hollywood debut alongside Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal in the remake of the 1989 movie “Road House,” originally starring Patrick Swayze. McGregor is actively engaged in promoting the film and has recently used his official social media account, X, to announce the trailer’s release date.

It’s worth noting that Liman has directed acclaimed movies like ‘The Bourne Identity,’ ‘Fair Game,’ and ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ to name a few.

McGregor continued the announcement with another tweet featuring pictures of himself and Gyllenhaal from the movie, captioning it, “ROADHOUSE! 🍻 🎶”. Both Gyllenhaal and McGregor previously promoted the movie during the fight week of UFC 285. Gyllenhaal had a face-off with UFC veteran Jay Hieron, who is also part of the movie. Interestingly, the scene where Gyllenhaal fights with Hieron inside the octagon was filmed during that fight week.

Alongside Conor McGregor, several UFC fighters have made appearances in different movies. Former welterweight champions Kamaru Usman and George St-Pierre have even made appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou had cameo roles in the Fast and Furious film franchise.

Roadhouse movie plot, release date, etc

In the Roadhouse movie, Jake Gyllenhaal plays the role of Elwood Dalton, an ex-UFC middleweight fighter who finds himself working in a roadhouse in the Florida Keys. In the original film, Patrick Swayze portrayed James Dalton, a professional cooler, who takes security at a fictional club called the Double Deuce in Jasper, Missouri.

Road House is set to premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, 2024, and will have a wide release through Amazon MGM Studios via Prime Video on March 21, 2024. Originally intended for a theatrical release, the plan was later adjusted to an OTT platform release at the recommendation of Amazon’s Executive Chairman, Jeff Bezos.

The original movie proved to be a box office success, grossing $60 million with a budget of $15 million, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. In the original film, Kelly Lynch played the love interest of Patrick Swayze, Dr. Elizabeth Clay. The remake will feature Daniela Melchior in the role of Ellie, the love interest of Jake Gyllenhaal’s character.

The specific role of Conor McGregor in the movie is currently unknown. Given that Jake Gyllenhaal is portraying an ex-UFC fighter, McGregor is likely to play the character of a UFC fighter as well. However, there are also circulating rumors that McGregor may take on the role of the main or secondary antagonist in the film.
