The announcement of a boxing bout between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul came as a surprise, creating ripples across the sporting community. Yet, with Mike aged 57, more than twice as old as Paul at 27, it drew criticism from some quarters.
Eddie Hearn, the Matchroom Boxing promoter, had already expressed his views on the fight. Now, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor has also shared his sentiments on the Tyson vs Paul matchup.
Conor McGregor discusses Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul
Conor McGregor is currently busy in promoting his debut movie, “Roadhouse,” where he takes on the role of the primary antagonist opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. During an interview on the red carpet for the film’s theatrical release at South by Southwest, McGregor expressed his discontent with the Tyson vs Paul fight booking, stating, “It’s a bit strange… interest is low… I don’t understand it.”
Despite this, McGregor extended well-wishes to Mike Tyson, whom he regards as one of his idols in combat sports. The Paul vs Tyson fight will be live-streamed on Netflix on July 20th from the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and is not a pay-per-view event.
McGregor’s movie is highly anticipated, particularly after the release of the movie trailer in which the performance of McGregor had fans riled up. However, the movie is also facing a copyright lawsuit from the screenwriter of the original Road House movie.
Mystic Mac’s promotional duties for the film have also delayed his return to the octagon. Still, the Irishman is focused on fighting Michael Chandler at middleweight in June at the International Fight Week PPV.
Conor McGregor once got involved in online beef with Jake Paul
Conor McGregor is known for engaging in online disputes with various figures in the combat sports realm, often seen in his now-deleted social media posts, particularly on X. A notable feud was with Jake Paul after Paul’s victory over Nate Diaz, a former opponent of McGregor.
In response to Paul’s performance, McGregor expressed his dissatisfaction, using terms like ‘retard’ and ‘garbage.’ Paul retaliated by accusing McGregor of using performance-enhancing drugs and continued trolling by sharing images of McGregor’s losses to Diaz, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Dustin Poirier.
McGregor has deleted his tweets but the online beef between the two was reported by Marca, who has screenshots of the tweet. Interestingly, this was not the first time Paul and McGregor had beef as the two have been at odds ever since Paul made his entry into the professional boxing realm.
Conor is not the only fighter that ‘The Problem Child’ has called out as he recently called out Sean Strickland as well. However, the former middleweight champion expressed that Paul does not do big numbers, and that is the reason why the UFC forbade it.
