Conor McGregor’s return to the octagon is one of the most anticipated events by MMA fans worldwide. After breaking his tibia at UFC 264 against Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor has been out of action.
Mystic Mac’s most recent appearance for the UFC was as a coach against Michael Chandler in the latest installment of The Ultimate Fighter reality show. He also recently appeared along with a string of combat sports legends at the boxing heavyweight fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou.
Conor McGregor talks about upcoming fight with Michael Chandler
McGregor and “Iron” Michael Chandler locked horns at TUF 31, the latest installment of the Ultimate Fighter. With the participation of the sports biggest star, it entertained the fans as it gave hope for McGregor’s return inside the octagon.
Chandler, like McGregor, last fought Dustin Poirier. Incidentally, he too lost to Poirier. McGregor’s last fight against Poirier at UFC 264 ended unceremoniously due to a doctor stoppage after round 1 due to a leg break. McGregor in a recent X, formerly Twitter, interactions has had nice words to say about Michael Chandler.
Even though there has been no official confirmation of the bout between McGregor and Chandler, it has been presumed that it will happen. Dana White in a press conference has said that Chandler is next for McGregor.
Even though Chandler is 2-3 in the UFC after his Bellator career, he has won 4 post-fight bonuses. McGregor has 10 bonuses in his 14 fights in the UFC where he sports a 10-4 record. McGregor’s entry into the USADA testing pool and his earliest eligible return date coincides with UFC 300.
Conor McGregor sheds light on UFC return date
Dana White recently announced the main events for the first three PPVs of 2024. UFC 297 in January is headlined by a middleweight title clash between Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland. In February, Alexander Volkanovski will have his featherweight title on the line against Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 followed by the bantamweight title fight between Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera at UFC 299.
However, UFC hasn’t revealed any plans for the UFC 300. Many fighters including the likes of Alex Pereira and Alexander Volkanovski have expressed their interest in fighting at UFC 300. Nevertheless, the overwhelming sentiment among the MMA world is that Conor McGregor would be heading the event as he is the sport’s biggest superstar.
UFC 100 had Brock Lesnar and Georges St. Pierre and UFC 200 had even big names like Amanda Nunes, Miesha Tate, Daniel Cormier, Anderson Silva, José Aldo, Frankie Edgar, and Cain Velasquez in addition to Brock Lesnar on the main card. It was supposed to have Jon Jones, but he was eventually replaced by Silva.
In a recent interaction with fans on X, formerly Twitter, Conor McGregor confirmed that he would be there at UFC 300. “I am confident we get the set date. There is no one holding no one back. A lot goes on behind the scenes but all involved are working hard to make it happen”, he confirmed in a tweet.
