Cowboys offers QB Will Grier to showcase himself in preseason despite releasing him after Trey Lance trade

Following an unfortunate 22-14 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason match on Saturday night, one major headache for the Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was to reach a conclusion regarding the destination of Will Grier as he had to decide if the franchise could carry a third quarterback on their 53-man roster.

Heading to the new season, the Cowboys look determined to continue their journey with Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. Grier was counting his days to hear a final decision and now, the franchise has an update for the QB after acquiring Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers in a recent trade.

Cowboys to release Will Grier after Trey Lance trade

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys had a discussion with Grier before the trade news of Lance started hitting the headlines and they informed him about his potential cut from their roster.

However, Dallas didn’t go too harsh on their veteran as they decided to play him in their upcoming preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders to let him showcase his potential to the other 31 NFL franchises ahead of the regular season.

The 28-year-old along with Cooper handled the Cowboys’ QB responsibility this preseason. In two preseason matchups, he recorded 35 of 39 for 335 yards along with two touchdowns and two interceptions while being sacked six times and compiling an 86.7 passer rating. Meanwhile, Rush threw 23 fewer passes this preseason than him and completed 73.1% of his passes along with one touchdown as well as a 104.5 passer rating.

NFL fans appreciate the Cowboys giving Will Grier a preseason shot

On Friday, the Cowboys acquired San Francisco’s Lance to let him play behind Dak and Cooper. Though his arrival signaled an immediate cut of Will from the team’s roster, their decision to let him play the preseason game against the Raiders earned respect from the NFL community.

A user wrote, “That’s acc very respectful.”

A netizen commented, “This is good on Dallas. Respect.”

Another person wrote, “I mean, they do have to do this. They’re not playing Dak, not even going to risk the backup in Rush and Lance hasn’t even gotten the playbook yet. Who else would they play at QB?”

Meanwhile, some fans also claimed Grier deserved to be the Cowboys QB2 more than Rush and said the team didn’t make a good decision by cutting him from their squad. What’s your take on this situation? Did Dallas make the right call? Let’s have a discussion in the comment section.
