Cowboys QB Dak Prescott discusses 49ers’ Trey Lance trade replacing Will Grier

The 49ers attempted to enrich their quarterback room with Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, trading their once-vaunted quarterback prospect Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have made room for Lance by bidding their vet player Will Grier goodbye.

The quarterback situation of the 49ers and the Cowboys took a significant turn with just one trade. However, the Cowboys quarterback for whom they have brought Lance in a hefty trade broke his silence on the unexpected move from his team.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott reacts to 49ers’ Trey Lance trade

The starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys for eight years already set a good rhythm with Grier. The veteran quarterback was completely ignorant of the sudden upheaval in the Dallas locker room, but he didn’t appear very shocked at the team’s decision which previously fired his longtime friend Ezekiel Elliott following their preseason finale on Saturday.

“To be honest with you, I’m not surprised by anything anymore. I’ve been in this league eight years on this team. It’s hard to say that I was surprised to be honest with you.”

Prescott referred to the Cowboys’ unexpected move from an almost entirely quiet offseason to this big trade as an actual business deal. Although other clubs used to talk with their current starting quarterbacks about adding another player to the position, the Cowboys management team did not treat Prescott with such respect. This move also did not surprise the veteran player as he labeled it as “That’s the front office.”

In any case, Dak has extended a warm welcome to Trey as he embarks on his new life in Dallas and has expressed his intention for Trey to play a significant part in helping Dallas realize its Super Bowl dream.

“I understand it’s a business. That’s a first round of talent, and you’re always trying to make your team better.  That’s the front office, so we’re going to welcome him as we do any teammate. Hope he makes us better and continue to get back at him. We have one goal as a team [win the Super Bowl].”

The former Niners quarterback is now projected to battle with the Cowboys’ last year’s backup Cooper Rush to have Prescotts’ backup role.

Will Grier bids the Cowboys farewell while bursting into tears

Trey Lance couldn’t beat out Darnold in San Fransisco as their backup quarterback, yet his trade came as a blow for Will Grier. As the decision was finalized before the Cowboys’ Saturday game, Grier had one last chance to prove his athletic prowess to the team after getting the starting position in that match.

Grier participated in the entire game, completing 29 of 35 throws for 305 yards while gaining 53 yards on the ground and adding two additional touchdowns. After the game, when he was quizzed about his emotions after learning that Dallas had designed their quarterback room without him, he had difficulty expressing his emotions.

“[It’s] bittersweet man, just close to a lot of these guys. That’s the hardest part. I mean, it was up and down, I was motivated. It was tough. It was a weird situation. And I think at the end of the day, I just relied on the fact that I know how to play football and I’m good at it. So I knew when the game started, I could just play football and that is what I did.”

The end of Will’s chapter in Dallas does not necessarily guarantee the future of the two-season quarterback for the 49ers with the Cowboys, as he has already established himself as a player with the fewest appearances with his debut team.
