After The Cenation Leader made a surprise appearance at Money In The Bank this year, many fans have been speculating about his next match. John Cena has been making sporadic appearances in WWE due to his busy acting schedule. However, a recent cryptic post from Cena has left fans wondering if he will compete for the Intercontinental Champion the next time he steps into the ring.
John Cena is a household name in WWE. After having an illustrious career in wrestling, the 16-time World Champ moved on to star in blockbuster Hollywood movies like the Fast and the Furious series and Suicide Squad. Nowadays, he is mainly being used to promote other younger stars, such as Austin Theory, who Cena faced at WrestleMania 39 for the United States Championship.
John Cena posts Gunther’s picture to potentially indicate IC title match
Throughout his career, John Cena has won several championships, including winning the World Heavyweight Championship 16 times. He is also a former United States Champion and Tag Team Champion.
However, one particular championship has eluded The Cenation Leader throughout his career, and that is the Intercontinental Championship. Now that he’s getting closer to retiring from in-ring competition, it looks like John Cena has his sights set on the prestigious IC title.
Cena took to Instagram to share a picture of current Intercontinental Champion Gunther, who recently became the second-longest reigning IC champion in WWE history. The 16-time Champ has the habit of posting images on his social media accounts without captions, forcing fans to try and decipher any hidden messages or the meaning behind his posts.
This could very well be Cena’s way of saying that he has his sights set on the IC championship. It should be noted that despite all of his achievements, Cena hasn’t yet become a Grand Slam Champion. If he manages to capture the IC glory, he will have fulfilled his goal before eventually retiring from in-ring competition.
However, this could simply be The Cenation Leader’s way of acknowledging Gunther’s incredible achievement. If the Imperium Leader holds the title for 21 days more, he would officially break The Honky Tonk Man’s record of being the longest-reigning IC champion. Therefore, it doesn’t look like WWE is taking off the title from Gunther anytime soon.
16-time world champion also seen highlighting Matt Cardona
Matt Cardona, also known as Zack Ryder, has been one of the most underrated stars in the company. Despite being mostly used by WWE as a jobber, Cardona soon gained a huge surge in popularity due to his YouTube channel. From thereon, he received a big push, and he even went on to secure the United States Championship.
Cardona had also worked a few segments with John Cena at that time as well. As of now, it looks like the former WWE star is interested in working with The Cenation Leader one last time before he retires.

In a recent tweet that asked the question of who should Cena face before he retires, Matt Cardona replied that it should be him. On the other hand, John Cena also acknowledged Cardona’s response by posting a screenshot of his reply on his Instagram with again, no captions.
Cardona has worked with Cena in a segment in WWE before, where his then-on-screen girlfriend kissed John Cena in front of him. This time, however, Cardona plans on facing Cena in a one-on-one match before the WWE Legend eventually retires.
