Since his arrival at Anfield in 2015, German tactician Jurgen Klopp has significantly transformed the fortunes of the once-fallen giants, Liverpool. Under his leadership, the club has become a formidable force, attracting world-class talent and steering the club to achieve significant success, revitalizing the English Premier League outfit.
After a successful eight-season tenure, Klopp has decided to part ways with the Reds, ahead of the end of his contractual term, which was set to run until 2026. Meanwhile, their recent FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, while giving their fans a memorable moment of the season, has subjected him to criticism.
Jurgen Klopp called out for his Liverpool record
Jurgen Klopp’s remarkable tenure featured two successive triumphant campaigns from the 2018/19 to 2019/20 seasons, with Liverpool winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019, followed by ending a 30-year-long Premier League title drought.
These accomplishments are considered some of the most monumental feats enjoyed by the Reds during Klopp’s tenure. However, Danny Mills, the former England and Leeds United player turned pundit and commentator, has criticized the 56-year-old, questioning the measure of his success as Liverpool’s boss.
Speaking on talkSPORT podcast, Mills argued that Jürgen Klopp is “not that good,” expressing doubts about his tenure as Liverpool boss, stating that Klopp’s work has failed to impress him. He further emphasized his point by stating, “Well, he’s won one Premier League in nine years.”
This comes as somewhat harsh given Liverpool narrowly missed out on the league title finishing just a single point behind Manchester City in two seasons under Klopp’s watch. They’ve also reached four European finals during Klopp’s tenure, unfortunately experiencing losses twice in the Champions League and once in the Europa League. Subsequently, He was voted as best club coach accolade for his work at the Merseyside club.
Klopp faces criticism over post-Manchester United match reaction
The Reds are front runners in the league title race this season, sitting second with equal points to Arsenal, who are in first place. Having recently clinched the Carabao Cup by beating Chelsea in the final, they now have their sights set on another prestigious domestic trophy, the FA Cup.
However, an unexpectedly shocking 4-3 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-final shattered Jürgen Klopp’s hopes of making his final season a memorable one.
After the defeat, during the post-match interview, Klopp appeared to be in no mood for questions from Danish reporter Niels Christian Frederiksen regarding his team’s intensity and lack of fitness.
Reflecting on the elimination with an unenthusiastic response, he eventually stormed off from the interview, which has drawn severe criticism.
“The farewell tour not going so well. Completely unlikable. Good riddance,” wrote one fan on X.
“I don’t think klopp wants to admit his squad is depleated and lack the intensity and quality he expects. Especially that goalkeeper, if Allison was in goal, Liverpool would’ve probably won. He’s not the kinda guy to out his players… Karius was a prime example”, wrote another.
