Tensions between James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers are escalating rapidly. Following his recent characterization of Sixers GM Daryl Morey as ‘a liar’ during an event in China, Harden has now definitively stated that the rift between him and the Sixers has reached an irreparable point.
The once-promising prospect of a resolution seems to have vanished, painting a picture of an increasingly strained relationship that may have far-reaching implications for both the player and the team.
Morey to eye fresh start by sacrificing Joel Embiid
Constant tensions between the Philadelphia 76ers and James Harden have thrown a pall over top player Joel Embiid’s peak years in the league. Embiid trade rumors have gained steam as internal strife has been increasingly obvious for the Sixers. According to the sources, Sixers president Daryl Morey’s ultimate goal is to completely revamp the franchise.
In 2020, after Morey had joined the team, he arranged a trade that would send Ben Simmons to the Sixers in return for James Harden, which led to Harden’s re-signing with the team the following year. Nonetheless, this transaction may be investigated by the league for any rule infractions.
Embiid has remained committed to the Sixers despite personal difficulties and the team’s failure to get to the playoffs. After six straight postseason appearances without reaching the Eastern Conference Finals and with a changing group of supporting players, Embiid’s loyalty will be put to the test during this turbulent season.
James Harden comments on “beyond repair” Sixers situation
James Harden discussed the strain in his relationship with the Philadelphia 76ers during a media session in Houston. When asked if he thought things could be fixed, Harden simply said, “I think so.” Throughout the summer, he showed patience, insisting that his attention was solely on the things he could change and on getting ready for the forthcoming season.
On August 14, at an Adidas promotional event in China, tensions had already been rising. James Harden has been vocal in his distaste for Sixers general manager Daryl Morey, calling him a fraud and promising to never work with Morey again. Their relationship changed drastically from their time together with the Houston Rockets, where Harden became a superstar under Morey’s guidance.

Despite expressing a desire to be dealt to the LA Clippers, trade talks broke down because of the 76ers’ prohibitive asking price. Harden was moved to the 76ers from the Nets in a deal that sent Ben Simmons packing. Harden elected to keep his $36.5 million player option. The current conflict is in stark contrast to their previous cooperative relationship.
