Boxing has been deprived of exciting matchups, particularly in the upper echelons due to the fear of losing. One fight that the fans want to see but doesn’t seem to be happening is an undisputed super middleweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez.
Benavidez has been very vocal about fighting Alvarez but the undisputed boxing champion has avoided the matchup multiple times. Now, Benavidez has taken a unique path to make the fight happen as he saw all other paths closed.
David Benavidez’s proposal to Turki Alalshikh in hope to fight Canelo Alvarez
Turki Alalshikh has become the godfather of high-profile boxing fights as evidenced by the bouts that he arranged in Riyadh. Alalshikh had already made high-profile fights in boxing, particularly in the heavyweight division.
Now, David Benavidez proposed a fight to Alalshikh via Instagram as he felt all other doors were closed. “@turkialalshik let’s bring the biggest and most exciting fight to Saudi Arabia. This will be the biggest Mexican vs Mexican American fight in the history of boxing”, Benavidez captioned his latest Instagram post.
Benavidez further proposed that he was even willing to donate his entire purse if he lost to Alvarez. Moreover, he also pledged to donate a portion of his purse if he defeated Alvarez as well. Benavidez’s proposal was respectful, unlike Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis who demanded two Ferraris to fight in Riyadh.
Nonetheless, as of now, Benavidez has set his sights on the light heavyweight title. A matchup with Oleksandr Gvozdyk is in the works with the winner getting a crack at undisputed glory at light heavyweight.
Is Canelo Alvarez ducking David Benavidez allegations true?
David Benavidez has been a mandatory challenger for Canelo Alvarez for quite some time. However, Alvarez has never agreed to a matchup with the ‘Mexican Monster.’ A fight was potentially in the works as Alvarez signed a 3-fight deal with PBC but Mexican exited the contract after a fight with Jermell Charlo.
Nonetheless, Alvarez re-signed with the PBC for a one-fight deal to fight Jamie Munguia. Moreover, Alvarez even addressed ducking allegations in an interview with IFL TV and even demanded $150-$200 million to fight Benavidez as per Marca. Benavidez responded to the demand viciously as trolled Alvarez to grow a pair of balls.
Henry Cejudo, the former two-division UFC champion, has stated that Alvarez is ducking Benavidez as a result of the politics in boxing. Moreover, he even urged the sanctioning bodies to strip Alvarez of the title.
Jose, the father of David Benavidez, also shared the same sentiment. Jose stated that Alvarez is afraid of Benavidez and that is the reason why the undisputed champion is ducking his younger son.
