Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is determined to secure a rematch with Islam Makhachev. His determination remains unwavering even after a recent obstacle prevented him from facing Makhachev at UFC 294 due to a significant cut above his eye.
At UFC 294, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski replaced Oliveira to fight Makhachev on short notice. Unfortunately, he fell to a first-round knockout. Charles Oliveira firmly believes he should get the next chance against Makhachev.
Charles Oliveira wants Islam Makhachev bout
Oliveira was recently interviewed by Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour. During the interview, Oliveira proclaimed that he was next in line for the title. With the help of a translator, Oliveira said to Helwani, “I want the belt. Whoever has got the belt, It doesn’t matter who has it, I want the belt.”
Charles Oliveira remains steadfast in his pursuit of the championship belt, regardless of the titleholder. His unwavering dedication and focus on his legacy drive him relentlessly toward championship success. When reflecting on UFC 294, Oliveira offered praise to the current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, acknowledging their first encounter at UFC 280, which ended in Makhachev’s favor with a second-round submission win.
Charles Oliveira isn’t the only one chasing the lightweight championship. Numerous top contenders, like Justin Gaethje, are also pushing for their title opportunity. Mateusz Gamrot, UFC 294’s official backup, might also voice his claim. The scene gets murkier with Makhachev considering a move to the welterweight division, potentially squaring off with Leon Edwards or Colby Covington after their upcoming clash.
Fortunately for Oliveira, Dana White has already insinuated that Oliveira would be getting the next title shot over Justin Gaethje. However, White was reluctant to say that it is a done deal and is 100 percent confirmed. Nevertheless, Oliveira can be happy with the fact that UFC considering him as the first option.
Injury update on Charles Oliveira
A deep cut above Oliveira’s eyebrow is the culprit for keeping Oliveira out of UFC 294. Oliveira received stitches to address it. Injuries like this often demand a 4-8 week healing window, followed by gradual training resumption.
Oliveira suffered the injury whilst he was sparring. The cut was a gnarly one and many criticized the former champion for engaging in hard sparring very close to the fight. Moreover, UFC CEO, Dana White even criticized Oliveira’s team for leaking the news before White could address it.
Oliveira, having demonstrated his mettle with a win over Beneil Dariush at UFC 289 aimed to reclaim the title that was once his.
