Days after Jerry Jones’ optimistic take, Dak Prescott reportedly in line for massive $50 million contract with Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys veteran Dak Prescott is already used to facing severe criticism from the fans. Following his poor record of throwing career-high 15 interceptions in the 2022 season, he became a source of trolling for the NFL community as many memes keep circulating on social media about the veteran.

Most recently, when Aaron Rodgers scored an interception during the New York Jets training camp, social media was full of subtle digs at Prescott as fans were comparing A-Rod with him. However, the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ firm faith in their quarterback’s caliber remains unshaken and the team is even considering signing the 30-year-old a new contract.

Cowboys’ Dak Prescott in talks for lucrative contract extension

According to an article by The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, he heard the Cowboys and Prescott are set to ink a new deal to keep in Dallas beyond 2024, via a league source.

The signal-callers four-year, $160 million contract made him the highest-paid QB at the time of signing. He will count for $26.8 million in 2023 against the cap and the amount will jump to $59.4 million in the next year.

The back-to-back sky-rocketed deals of Aaron Rodgers (three-year, $150 million), Jalen Hurts ( five-year, $255 million), Lamar Jackson ( five-year, $260 million), and Justin Herbert (five-year, $262.5 million) changed the landscape of the QB market.

Dak‘s new contract will be negotiated by Todd France of CAA Sports based on the current market conditions of the signal-callers and the authority ensured they might end up securing a deal to match the annual average value of the highest-paid QBs in the league right now.

Jerry Jones is expecting big things from Dak Prescott in 2023

Despite miserably playing last season, Dallas owner Jones’ unwavering commitment to Prescott is another reason for his potential new big deal. While speaking to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in March, Jones drew the comparison of the retired NFL legend Tom Brady to project what Dak can do for the Cowboys in the future.

“I’ve really felt for quite a while that Dak has the ability, and I don’t want to dare do this to Dak or me or anybody, but I think just as Brady became, in my mind, better and better and more impactful as [the Patriots] won as he got into his career—I think Dak really has those qualities. I think he can get better.”

Dak Prescott

Brady earned six Super Bowl titles and AFC championships for the New England Patriots during his prolonged stint with them. Before TB12’s arrival, the Patriots were nothing and now, after his departure, they are again struggling in the league. The California Cool is like second to none and hence, comparing him with Prescott might seem irrelevant.

However, the former Mississippi State standout recorded 4,449 passing yards, 37 touchdowns along with 10 interceptions back in 2021. It remains to be seen if the dual-threat can bounce back to be a new threat in the league to earn a long-time commitment from the Cowboys.
