Days after Sergio Busquets joins Lionel Messi in MLS, new Barcelona skipper snubs $16 million Saudi transfer proposal

Barcelona have a long line of loyal and quality captains. From Carles Puyol to Xavi to Andres Iniesta and then Lionel Messi, the club has had a few of the best captains in recent memory. While Puyol managed to spend his whole senior career playing at Barcelona, the same can’t be said about his successors – Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi, all of whom left the club.

Xavi went on to Al-Sadd, a Qatari club, while Iniesta went on to play for Vissele Kobe, a Japanese club. On the other hand, Messi had one more chance at the highest level as PSG snapped him up on a two-year deal before moving to the MLS to play for Inter Miami in July, where he has shone so far.

Busquets teams up with Messi once again

Sergio Busquets became Barcelona’s captain following the departure of Lionel Messi to PSG, where the Argentine spent the next two years of his career before moving to the MLS to play for Inter Miami. However, Busquets did not assume his role longer than everyone expected, as he left Barcelona to join Lionel Messi in the MLS following the expiration of his contract.

Xavi tried to convince the Spaniard to spend at least another season at the club, but Busquets reportedly felt his time at the club was up as he couldn’t continue to play at the level he would need to thrive at the club. He joined Messi at Inter Miami alongside another former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba. Together, they’ve been a revelation for Inter Miami, helping the club to its first trophy since its inception. With Lionel Messi leading the line, Inter Miami won the Leagues Cup, with the Argentine scoring ten goals in seven games for his new club.

Sergi Roberto turns down lucrative Saudi offer

Following the departure of Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto was appointed as the new Barcelona captain, and his display of loyalty may make him one of the best captains in the club’s history. The Spaniard reportedly received a lucrative offer worth $16 million from a Saudi club but rejected it as he only recently signed a new contract at Barcelona, taking a pay cut to make that possible.
