Days before US Open test, former World number 2 identifies Carlos Alcaraz’s biggest competitor

Tennis pundits and fans across the world are convinced that Carlos Alcaraz is taking over the next era of tennis. At just 20 years old, the young Spaniard has bagged 2 Grand Slams and continues to win hearts with his formidable adaptability on-court and innocent smile off-court. However, different strokes please different folk, so young Charly will not always get just love and support from everyone.

After his sensation performance defeating the legendary Novak Djokovic in the center court, laud and praise surrounded Charly. But former World number 2 Alex Corretja thinks otherwise. While the tennis community has deemed Carlos as the only player to be able to defeat the reigning supreme, Djoker, Corretja claimed that Carlos still has a lot of other things to worry about.

Alex Corretja reveals unexpected rival of Carlos Alcaraz

In the 1990s, the Spanish tennis professional won 17 titles and made it to the finals of Roland Garros twice during his time. Now, at 49 years of age, Alex Corretja continues to keep in touch with the world of tennis and share his wise opinions. With regard to the young rising star Carlos Alcaraz, he said, “Carlos is an incredible player, but he is not superhuman and that means he will have bad days.”

For the fans of the Wimbledon-winning icon 0n the center stage of the tennis world, these comments must be truly grounding. The fellow Spaniard’s comment on the rising star completely humanized the formidable force of Charly. Furthermore, regarding the comparisons between Charly and the Big Three trio, Corretja told Tennis365:

“What we have seen from Novak (Djokovic), Roger (Federer), and Rafael (Nadal) in recent years is not normal. Their consistency is incredible and we have got used to it. I don’t expect that to be the way we see tennis now and if Alcaraz is the No 1, he will have some weeks when he loses early. That is normal in tennis.”

He further added: “What we see with these three guys winning 20 Grand Slams and all the big tournaments is not what tennis is normally like. Things will be different now. Carlos will not win every tournament. We will see others beat him, others have better days. This is normal in tennis.”

This is a rather unique perspective on the young rising star Carlos Alcaraz who has been placed on the pedestal. The Swiss Maestro has also mentioned that the expectations of the 20-year-old and the comparisons to the Big Three might get overwhelming. Therefore, Alex Corretja’s comment might be rather humanizing and comforting to the two-time Grand Slam winner, especially with the upcoming US Open.
