The sexual assault case of the Houston Texans’ former player, Deshaun Watson, unfolded a stroke of great luck for the Cleveland Browns as they were eventually able to bolster their offense with the seasoned quarterback. As the QB and his team has been enjoying a good fit, bad luck chose to visit them in the middle of the season.
The starter of the Browns’ injury-marred season has been subject to wide criticism after the team had to embrace the news of the certainty of losing their second-year quarterback for the whole season.
Deshaun Watson injury update
After skipping three games this season for injuries, Deshaun Watson again injured himself during the first half of Sunday’s 33-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. In spite of his injury, Watson continued his play, after missing some snaps before the third quarter.
Following the game, he had to undergo an MRI on his left ankle, their coach Kevin Stefanski revealed. Amid this heated situation, the team announced on Wednesday that the starter would have to undergo season-ending surgery on a broken bone in his throwing shoulder.
It is not due to his latest injury vs. Ravens, rather it is related to the injury he has been sustaining since Week 3. After skipping the Week 9 game for a shoulder injury, Watson again fell prey to another shoulder injury in the Week 10 game.
The 28-year-old informed the medical staff of new discomfort in his right shoulder that he felt after he took a hit in the first half. Later, an MRI of his right shoulder on Monday revealed a displaced fracture to the glenoid. The news appeared as a source of discontent for the whole football world, uttered by Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry
“Obviously we are very disappointed and devastated for Deshaun, especially given all that he has battled and gone through medically this season,” he said.
In spite of skipping the Week 10 game for some snaps, Watson’s return on the field in second half played a dominant role in his team’s win. The player completed all 14 of his pass attempts for 134 yards and also scored a touchdown during the game.
Potential Deshaun Watson replacement
The healthy Deshaun Watson was the player fit for the Browns offense in all aspects, though he is yet to win the hearts of his fans. During his six appearances so far, the team had snatched victory in five of them, instigating Emmanuel Acho to raise eyebrows on the former Texans player’s trade.
As Deshaun Watson has to leave his team at least for an unspecified timetable, the Browns look to the remainder of the season. Pro Football Network listed the possible solutions for Brown’s quarterback position with two players on their roster, including, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker. They also think to add depth, the team can keep their eye on free-agent quarterbacks, such as Cam Newton, Colt McCoy, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, and Colin Kaepernick.
Meanwhile, to replace their starter, Berry exchanged his views on carrying three quarterbacks on the roster, per Cleveland Browns. Nevertheless, the team already has made up its decision to start next week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with Robinson, being satisfied with his repertoire.
“We think he’s a talented kid. He’s very smart, very diligent as a worker, and we’re pleased with his progress so far. But we’re going to certainly need all hands-on deck as we move forward,” Berry said.
Robinson previously showed his athleticism during Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens when Watson missed the game.
Do you think the move will be a worthy one for the Browns?
