Despite Caleb Williams’ outstanding performance, fans criticize USC QB as “overrated” after Utah loss

The USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has a habit of painting nails before every game. He has wanted to paint the football field with magnificent performance as well and has been quite successful in the run, except for the last two matches.

Before facing off against Utah Utes on Saturday night, the Trojans knew that a loss to the team might put their Pac-12 title dreams in jeopardy. However, even tough this equation couldn’t force them to give their best on the field, and they went down to the Utes back-to-back three times. The consequence of the loss fell heavy on Williams as the NFL community rallied on social media to tear him apart following the game.

After sustaining an embarrassing loss to Notre Dame last weekend in Indiana, the defeat against Utah marked the USC’s second straight loss. The team’s defense had been failing to showcase charm under defensive coordinator Alex Grinch following the last season. The team’s offense, led by Williams, also couldn’t turn the match in their favor.

The Trojans QB had previously been lauded by sports enthusiasts for his strong display of performance in the O-line, albeit the charm was missing last night. The Trojans fans didn’t shy away from terming him as “overrated” shortly after the loss.

The signal-caller is regarded as the undisputed top prospect of the 2024 NFL draft class of USC, and if the Chicago Bears possess the No.1 pick, he can be seen donning the Bears jersey soon. Many fans questioned his potential to be selected as the number one draft pick following the loss.

A netizen wrote, “Not my number one pick.”

The USC’s reigning Heisman Trophy winner has reportedly sought partial ownership of the NFL franchise that would draft him in the next year. The NFL community has already bashed him heavily following the unusual claim, and after Saturday’s match, he had to face the jab again.

A user wrote, “And he wants to own an NFL team.”

Many scouts and analysts took notice of Caleb’s excellent on-field performance, and he was even projected to be in the group of veteran Andrew Luck and Trevor Lawrence in terms of buzz prior to his journey in the NFL. Nevertheless, if the QB fails to bounce back to his early form, the hype will dissipate overnight.

Caleb Williams’ performance vs Utah

Caleb Williams entered the match against the Utah Utes with the nation’s No. 2 scoring offense in collegiate football circuit that boasts the record of averaging 47.3 points per game. The signal-caller has also played a pivotal role in the O-line by throwing for 288 passing yards per contest before yesterday’s campaign.

The 21-year-old tried to break the losing streak against Utah and even tried to save the match from the rival by scoring a rushing touchdown in the final minutes. However, the Utes didn’t let the win go into the Trojans’ hands and recorded the game-winning field goal after a while.

Though Caleb tried well, he fell short of expectations in the match by completing 24 of his 34 pass attempts for 256 yards along with no touchdowns, and no interceptions, via Sports Illustrated.

The loss was like a double blow for the young star as he was coming off of the worst game of his career at Notre Dame last weekend, where he had three interceptions, and his squad had to digest a 28-point loss.
