Despite Manchester United exile, Mason Greenwood garners support from former teammates after special moment

Mason Greenwood has finally made his return to football after Manchester United allowed him to go on loan to Getafe. He had been sidelined from the United squad for a while due to his involvement in a domestic abuse case.

The fans of his new club were delighted to have such an exciting player, and Greenwood himself was glad to be back in action. The English youngster made his much-awaited debut in La Liga, providing an assist in his debut match, marking a significant milestone in his new career.

Mason Greenwood opens his La Liga account

Mason Greenwood has now opened his goal-scoring account for the Spanish club, and it is also his first La Liga goal. In a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo, the player scored a goal in the 33rd minute, giving the club the lead for some time. Eventually, they had to settle for a draw. Prior to this, Mason Greenwood’s last goal was on January 19, 2022, in a 3-1 win for United against Brentford. It means he has scored a goal after nearly two years.

Since his move to Spain, the forward has played five games for the club, and has only one goal and an assist. Getafe are 11th in the league with 10 points, just two points above the relegations spots. In the nine games the club has played, Greenwood has only played in five of those.

This is a bit surprising considering his popularity among the fans, with his shirt being sold the most in recent years. Though it could be that, the manager wants to ease the player into action, as he has been absent for a long time and has also come to a new environment.

Former teammates show support for Greenwood

Greenwood shared an Instagram post to celebrate his first goal writing, “Happy to score my first goal for @getafecf amazing team spirit to come away from the game with a point.”

Under the post, he received much love from fans, including many from his former club teammates. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan Bissaka, Scott Mctominay, Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, and some other current players of the club all liked the post.

However, the comments were disabled, as Mason has done for a long time since his domestic abuse allegations spread. Otherwise, he may have received words of encouragement from his former teammates as well.

It is clear that he still has support from his old dressing room and that they will be welcoming him back if the club decides so. Greenwood has been through a tough time, and so he will need all the appreciation and help he gets.

Mason Greenwood could next feature for Getafe on Saturday against Real Betis where he would want to score again to keep his form going.
