Red Bull have been able to remain undefeated since the beginning of 2023, and this has enabled Max Verstappen to extend his championship lead to 125 points. Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen gave us a thrilling 2021 season, and Max Verstappen was triumphant in the controversial final event in Abu Dhabi. The Mercedes squad has yet to adjust to the current regulations, which has resulted in Hamilton not winning any races since the end of 2021.
Since then, there have been a lot of experts giving their opinion on Lewis’s fall, and now, recently, Eddie Jordan, an ex-F1 team owner of Jordan Grand Prix, says that he thinks Hamilton is “too old.”
Ex-team owner claims age puts Hamilton at a disadvantage
Formula 1 fans would be ecstatic to witness Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen driving for the same F1 team at the head of the pack. While it appears to be improbable, Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard discuss in the Formula For Success podcast which of the two giants would then emerge on top.
During the podcast the above hypothetical scenario was discussed and this is what Eddie had to say about it, “Well it depends if you say the same car, you have to talk about age and the same level of experience as well,“ the Irishman points out, adding that the comparison is not entirely fair now. To which ex-F1 driver Coulthard replies, “So you think right now, Lewis is too old to go head to head with Max?” To which, Jordan instantly replies, “Yes, I think it is over”.
The Irishman thinks that Max Verstappen is at the ideal age and experience level to be a Formula 1 champion. He has the talent, the drive, and the knowledge to succeed, and he is also surrounded by a great team that supports him. He concluded by saying that if Max and Lewis Hamilton were in the same car, Max would win. His take on the topic was echoed by the host.
David Coulthard said that he believes both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are still capable of winning races and championships. However, he thinks that there would be some tension between them if they were on the same team, similar to the rivalry between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna back in the day. Coulthard also added that Verstappen has the edge over Hamilton because he is younger and more focused on racing. Hamilton, on the other hand, has a lot of other interests outside of Formula 1, which could take away his focus.
At what age did Lewis Hamilton join the McLaren F1 team?
The seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, was once young too and in his prime. Lewis made one of the most impressive debuts in the sport of Formula 1. The Briton joined the sport of racing for Mclaren back in 2007. He was just 22 years old at the time, and he was the first black driver to race in the series. He won four races and finished on the podium 10 times. He also set a record for the most points scored by a rookie. Lewis was just short of one point to win the world championship.
But in 2008, Hamilton hit back and won his first drivers’ championship. At that time, he became the youngest driver to win the title, at the age of 23 but was soon demoted to the 2nd position in all time when Vettel beat him to it by 166 days. He also became the first black driver to win the title.
Hamilton has gone on to win seven Drivers’ Championships, making him the most successful British driver in Formula 1 history. He is also one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, with 103 race wins. Hamilton’s early days in Formula 1 were marked by success and controversy. However, he has undoubtedly established himself as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
