The Philadelphia Eagles experienced a promising start to the 2023 season but faced a downturn after Week 12. Despite securing a playoff spot, their postseason performance fell short, leading to an exit from the Super Bowl race. Head coach Nick Sirianni retained his job for the upcoming season, but the Eagles opted to part ways with defensive coordinator Sean Desai.
The Eagles now have their new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. The veteran has already started building a solid corp to fortify the defensive side. Fangio is hiring one of his colleagues and former Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach, Clint Hurtt, for the same spot in the Philly squad.
Eagles sign former Seahawks DC Clint Hurtt
When former coordinators like Jim Caldwell had been interviewing for the linebackers coach spot, many assumed the Eagles might be looking to round out the staff. Later, NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared that Clint Hurtt is set to become their defensive line coach. Joining him in the move to the Eagles is one of his assistants, Karl Scott. Hurtt’s arrival comes on the heels of a notable exodus from the Seahawks coaching staff, with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron also departing for a new opportunity.
With Vic Fangio as the newly appointed defensive coordinator, Hurtt is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing Philly’s defensive capabilities. He is now tasked with the challenge of rejuvenating the Eagles’ D-line, which faced difficulties meeting expectations in the previous season.
The veteran will be responsible for maximizing the potential of standout players like Jalen Carter, and Milton Williams. The plus point is he will have a roster brimming with promise, including emerging talents like Marlon Tuipulotu, and Thomas Booker. With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the ex-Seahawks vet has the opportunity to mold a formidable defensive unit capable of making significant strides in the upcoming season.
How good is Clint Hurtt’s NFL resume?
For the last two seasons, Clint Hurtt served as the defensive play-caller for the Seattle Seahawks. He joined the team in 2017, initially holding the dual role of assistant head coach and defensive line coach. After Ken Norton Jr.’s departure following the 2021 season, Hurtt was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator.
Under Hurtt’s guidance, the Seahawks’ defense encountered significant challenges, particularly in the most recent season. Despite having considerable talent, the team’s defensive performance ranked near the bottom of the league in key statistical categories. While the pass rush showcased strength, deficiencies in run defense and coverage hindered the overall unit’s effectiveness.
Nevertheless, there was notable improvement in the team’s sack numbers during the veteran’s tenure. Following the recording of 34 sacks in 2021, the Seahawks experienced an increase to 45 in 2022 and further elevated to 47 in 2023. Additionally, he played a crucial role in the development of key defensive players. Examples such as Uchenna Nwosu and Boye Mafe stand as evidence of his significant contributions to player development.
Before joining the Seahawks, Clint Hurtt’s coaching journey included a stint with the Chicago Bears as an assistant defensive line coach in 2014.In fact, he had collaborated with Vic Fangio during the Bears’ 2015-2018 seasons.
