Edge bids farewell to hometown crowd in off-air segment following SmackDown amid retirement speculations

It looks like the time has finally come for The Rated-R Superstar to hang up his boots on SmackDown this week. In his final match, Edge faced off against Sheamus in a singles bout last night in his hometown, Toronto, Canada. As the show went off-air, The Ultimate Opportunist thanked the Toronto crowd for supporting him all these years.

Edge made his long-awaited and speculated return at Royal Rumble 2020. This was his second stint in WWE, as he had to retire once in 2011 due to a life-threatening neck injury.

Since his return, he has participated in a lot of high-profile matches, including his Royal Rumble win in 2021, the Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37, his reignited feud with his former partner Randy Orton, and last but not the least, his Hell In A Cell match against Seth Rollins.

Edge bids farewell to the Toronto crowd

Last week, Edge shared a segment with the leader of The Brawling Brutes, Sheamus. He thanked The Celtic Warrior for influencing him and helping him get back in shape for making his return. He went on to say how if it hadn’t been for Sheamus, he probably wouldn’t have been able to return to wrestling.

The Rated-R Superstar then proceeded to challenge The Celtic Warrior for a singles match on SmackDown this week. Sheamus agreed, and thus the final match of The Ultimate Opportunist took place on SmackDown in Toronto last night. It should also be mentioned that this week marks his 25th Anniversary in WWE.

Edge and Sheamus went head-to-head in the main event of the night and the Toronto crowd erupted in cheers as they saw their hometown hero compete in his last match. Even The Rated-R Superstar’s wife, Beth Phoenix was present in the ringside, who was brought to tears in the middle of the match.

After a hard-fought battle, Sheamus managed to counter Edge’s spear and hit him with a powerful Brogue Kick. However, that was not enough to put the hometown hero down. Edge finally mustered enough strength to hit The Celtic Warrior with consecutive Spears and pin him for the win.

After the match, The Rated-R Superstar addressed the Toronto crowd and thanked them for their continuous years of support. He went on to say that this night will be the most memorable of his career. And thus, The Ultimate Opportunist went out on a high note, facing the fans, and made his way out as his music was playing.

“Rated-R superstar” potentially retires for the second time

After his match with Sheamus on SmackDown this week, Edge finally hung up his boots after nearly 25 years in WWE. When it was announced that he would be returning to WWE in 2020, it was known that his contract was of only 3 years. And The Rated-R Superstar confirmed this week that his match on SmackDown this week is indeed the final match according to his contract.

In a recent video, Edge talked about how it was getting hard for him to compete in the ring with each progressing year. He is turning 50 this October and wanted to retire at a time when he could still deliver a good performance and please his fans.

This may mark the end of Edge’s time as a competitor but we may still see him as a official under WWE or other promotions! What is your take on the Rated-R Superstar’s career? Let us know below!
