Elias, also known as Jeffrey Daniel Sciullo, joined the Stamford-based company back in 2014, starting in the NXT brand. Famous for his occasional concerts and for using his iconic guitar to harm his opponents, Elias made his first appearance on the main roster during an 8-man tag team match on April 10, 2017.
The former WWE star recently spoke about his partnership and rivalry with Kevin Owens during his tenure with WWE. The 36-year-old star stated that KO is one of the best athletes in WWE, recalling their last match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in 2022.
Elias’s sentiments about his former WWE co-worker Kevin Owens
The ‘Heavy Metal Jesus’ Elias recently appeared at For the Love of Wrestling, where he disclosed his sentiments for working with Kevin Owens, who will fight at WM 40, at WWE. ‘The Drifter’ shared several details about working with KO and what he took from that experience.
He said, “Me and Kev have a lot of great moments, together and against each other. We formed a friendship really quickly in WWE. He’s one of the best guys around. … Kev is awesome. He’s always got my back.”
Elias continued by saying that fighting against Owens in the ring is brutal and tough. “He is a very physical guy. He hits hard, he slams hard, he’s heavy when he jumps on you. But he’s an amazing wrestler. Always has classic, great matches. He’s just so exciting. I just think me and him have a lot of chemistry.”
Back in 2022, Elias was playing the gimmick of Ezekiel, and he got involved in a feud with the ‘Headlock’ master. Both WWE stars clashed at multiple intervals and got to face off at Hell in a Cell PPV at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. Although their rivalry ended there, but fans still find the clash as one of the highlights of 2022.
Elias was dismissed from the WWE contract in September last year
WWE and UFC merged last year to create the TKO Group Holdings, which is a $21.4-billion worth sports giant organization. In 2023, a lot of WWE athletes were dismissed from the promotion after a budget cut was initialized. The list of the roster cut included Elias, Dolph Ziggler, Mustafa Ali, Shelton Benjamin, Emma, Aliyah, Top Dolla, Madcap Moss, Rick Boogs, Dana Brooke, Bryson Montana, Matt Riddle, Mace and Mansoor.
After his contract was terminated, Elias posted on Twitter, writing, “From Drifting onto the scene..To WrestleMania with John Cena & The Undertaker. To Millions around the world for years Walking With Elias.A #1 iTunes Album & To being my own younger brother (ZEKE), while traveling the world. It’s been a blast. God is Good!”
Currently, ‘The Frontman’ Elias has returned to the independent circuit and is under a new gimmick named Elijah. His first match after leaving WWE saw him facing Mike Bailey at Wrestling Revolver on February 18, 2024. Fans hope to see the ‘Heavy Metal Jesus’ return one day to WWE, making a legendary comeback and singing a song like the old days.
