In soccer, results are all that matter, and that claim couldn’t be truer in the case of Emma Hayes. The London-born women’s soccer manager is one of the most experienced managers in women’s football, with experiences both at home and abroad, particularly in her Chelsea role, which she has been in since August 2012, when she was initially hired as an interim manager.
After leading Chelsea to six league titles in over a decade, her reputation has now earned her the big job in the United States as Hayes will now officially take on the head coach role for the USWNT at the end of the current season.
Emma Hayes to become 10th full-time head coach of the USWNT
As the club announced earlier this month, Emma Hayes will step down as manager of Chelsea’s women’s team at the end of the current campaign. In the statement, the club said Hayes wanted “to pursue a new opportunity outside the WSL and club football.”
Hayes has held her job in London since August 2012, when she was first appointed. She has since delivered six league titles, among many other trophies for the Blues, and at the end of the season, she’ll be taking on a new responsibility in the United States.
“This is a huge honor to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history,” the experienced manager said.
“The feelings and connection I have for this team and for this country run deep. I’ve dreamed about coaching the USA for a long time, so to get this opportunity is a dream come true.
“I know there is work to do to achieve our goals of winning consistently at the highest levels. To get there, it will require dedication, devotion, and collaboration from the players, staff, and everyone at the U.S. Soccer Federation,” she concluded.
USWNT, who recently lost icon Megan Rapinoe to retirement, will look to a brighter future after a disappointing showing at the last Women’s World Cup, which saw them get knocked out by Sweden.
Exploring Emma Hayes’ achievements
Emma Hayes remains one of the most successful managers in women’s football, especially for her success with Chelsea. The English manager won the FA Women’s Super League six times in 2015, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, a record win for any manager in the league’s history.
She also won the Women’s FA Cup five times, including three consecutive times in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Her consistent title wins led to her being picked as the Best FIFA Football Coach in 2021 before entering the Women’s Super League Hall of Fame in the same year.
She became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2016 before being recognized as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022.
Hayes will be looking to restore order at her new job as the USWNT manager after Megan Rapinoe has controversially dominated the headlines in the past few years as the team’s captain, including a controversial retirement statement.
