Enzo Fernandez was one of Argentina’s brightest stars of the World Cup, which made Chelsea go all-in for the former Benfica man, who had to break the bank to bring him to Stamford Bridge. The signing of Enzo cost the Blues £106.7 million, a British record, breaking the one previously set by Liverpool’s sale of Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona.
Sadly, Enzo Fernandez has not justified that huge fee. He’s been sacrificed for other attacking-minded options in recent weeks, and when he finally got his chance in the league cup against Newcastle yesterday, the World Cup winner only lasted thirty minutes as injury forced Pochettino to withdraw him.
How long would it take for Enzo Fernandez to recover?
Enzo Fernandez hasn’t quite hit the ground running yet at Chelsea, and recent injury woes are not helping the former Benfica man. Chelsea broke the bank to land Enzo in January, paying a British record fee for the World Cup winner amid a recent spending spree. However, his first few months at Stamford Bridge have been marred by inconsistent performances and injury woes.
Fernandez got the nod to start against Newcastle in the league cup yesterday and only lasted thirty minutes on the pitch. He was seen holding his thigh as he walked off, with Pochettino later confirming that the Argentine had been feeling unwell before the match.
“He had to go out because he was a little bit sick before the game. He suffered something in his stomach. He wanted to play but didn’t feel well and went off,” the Chelsea manager confirmed.
However, later discoveries showed that the Argentine had suffered a groin injury which could keep him out for a few months.
“Enzo Fernandez is suffering from the early stages of pubalgia, chronic groin injury. The recovery involves either rest or treatment to alleviate discomfort during play and prevent its impact,” a source confirmed on Twitter.
Enzo Fernandez spotted in tears after Chelsea win
Chelsea look to be putting their recent poor form behind them as they recovered from an early setback to win 4-2 on penalties against Newcastle in the League Cup semi-finals.
Callum Wilson scored his first goal since returning from injury to hand Newcastle the lead in the 16th minute. Eddie Howe’s men thought they had wrapped up the game, but Chelsea’s Mudryk had other ideas, as he scored a late equalizer in the 92nd minute of the game.
This forced the game into penalties, which the Blues won 4-2. While everyone was celebrating the win, Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea’s record signing, was spotted in tears. After 31 minutes of action in the first half, he had been withdrawn, leading to fears that the Argentine may have suffered a serious injury.
This turned out to be true, as reports later suggested that the World Cup winner may be suffering from a chronic groin injury that could keep him out for up to 12 weeks.
This came a few days after Argentina’s one-year anniversary of becoming World Champions with Lionel Messi.
