Ex-F1 champ Lewis Hamilton prevails over Max Verstappen despite championship deficit

On track this season, Max Verstappen has dominated over the rest of the grid, including former rival Lewis Hamilton and teammate Sergio Perez. In 2023, Max has already won 10 out of 12 races.

However, despite this dominance, it seems that Lewis Hamilton is leading in terms of fans’ support. While this could be due to Max’s recent speeding incident drawing poor publicity on him, it could also be a biased sample space in terms of the poll conducted!

Hamilton triumphs over Verstappen in fan poll with 95% support

During this summer break, ex F1 driver and Sky Sports presenter Martin Brundle has been out and about speaking to fans of Formula 1 in the UK, asking them who they prefer: Lewis or Max?

Regarding the results of the poll, Brundle revealed on social media, ““95% have said Lewis, so there you have it. Just a Marty poll but fact.”

One contributing factor to the results of the poll being heavily skewed in Lewis’ favour could be the recent speeding incident Max was involved in. While driving his Aston Martin Valkyrie down the streets of Monaco, it has been reported that the Dutchman exceeded the speed limit of 90 kph by 30 kph!

However, this poll was conducted in the UK, and Lewis is a British racing driver. Therefore, it is a fair argument that the sample space chosen by Brundle is tainted with bias in favour of Lewis!

Unfortunately for Lewis, however, the results of the poll are in complete contrast to the disparity between Lewis and Max in the standings this season.

Lewis Hamilton trails by 166 points in the F1 championship standings

In 2023, Max is averaging at 26.2 points per race weekend. This statistic is seemingly impossible given that the maximum points that can be scored in a single race is 26, with 25 points awarded to P1 and an extra point for the fastest lap.

But, when you consider Max’s success at sprint race weekends, the statistic explains itself. On the other hand, Lewis is currently sat at P4 in the standings, after a strong start to the season. But, due to the significant disparity in Lewis’ and Max’s cars in 2023, there is a 166 point gap between the two.

Hamilton: 'Problems between me and Max? Why should I have a problem?'

Mercedes have already set their sights on 2024 development, with hopes to take the fight to Red Bull with a faster car next season. However, until then, all Lewis and Mercedes can do is hold on to P2 in the constructors’ championship this season.
