The Kansas City Chiefs had their only Super Bowl win, Super Bowl IV, till their superstar Patrick Mahomes started his majestic journey in the NFL. The 27-year-old veteran decided to end his team’s 50-year Championship trophy drought by leading them to win the title in 2020 (Super Bowl LIV) and continued the winning trend by earning another title in 2023 (Super Bowl LVII).
Amid the ongoing discussion regarding the Chiefs earning two Lombardi trophies back-to-back, a former wide receiver decided to share his thoughts on meeting Kansas City’s quarterback in his earlier days in the league.
Julian Edelman recalls fun encounter with Young Mahomes
During a recent appearance on the Chiefs Travis Kelce and the Philadelphia Eagles Jason Kelce’s ‘The New Heights’ podcast, the former New England Patriots star Julian Edelman shed light on his quality time with rookie Mahomes. The Chiefs QB was spending his rookie season as a backup of Alex Smith before being declared as a starter in 2018.
Edelman shared the story of his first encounter with the two-time MVP,
“I remember hanging out with Pat once. It was before he was a starter. We were at a Super Bowl. Still Alex’s backup, he was a rookie. He was like a kid, like, a little kid drinking a bunch of beers and sh*t.”
Nevertheless, things have changed now as Kansas City’s signal-caller has turned into a megastar after taking his team to win two trophies in three seasons. Besides being a successful footballer, he is also the father of two kids now.
When did Patrick Mahomes start playing in the NFL?
Before starting his national football career, Pat was actually a top prospect in the 2014 MLB draft after being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round, albeit he later chose the NFL route after heading to Texas Tech University. He set several records in the NCAA back in 2016 and finished the year with multiple records including 421 yards per game, 5,052 passing yards, 5312 total offense along with 53 touchdowns.

The five-time Pro Bowler ‘reportedly’ made up his mind to abstain from attending his senior year as a Red Raider at Texas Tech after attaining eligibility for the NFL Draft in 2017. The potential Hall of Famer was selected by the Chiefs as the 10th overall in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and turned heads in his first season as a starting quarterback after earning an MVP title in that season. Since then, he didn’t have to look back again.
