Tom Brady and Julian Edelman made up a strong quarterback-receiver combination for the New England Patriots, yet their careers did not begin at the same time as Brady was already well-known to Edelman when the latter began his stint with the Patriots.
Julian previously asserted that the first interaction with the seven-time Super Bowl winner was not satisfactory enough. Recently, the former NFL player again recounted his rookie campaign while stating his excitement over Tom Terrifics’ initial appearance
Edelman’s surprising first impression of Tom Brady
The Patriots drafted Julian in the 2009 NFL draft and the former receiver joined the reigning era of the three-time NFL MVP when he already won three Super Bowls.
When Julian made his appearance on the Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce show “New Height,” he recalled his first interaction with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He was confused at first by the 6.2″s lofty stature and dashing appearance,
“Dude’s handsome, f***ing tall and handsome. I literally walked in through the locker room, I had my big a**, like, 20-inch binder of plays because we used to have playbooks. I walked in and almost dropped it. I’m like ‘Damn, he’s tall, he’s handsome’.”
As soon as Toms’s presence caught his attention, the former Patriots player was once more taken aback by the playing ability of TB12. He was inspired by the idea that a player with such outrageously good looks could be so brazen on the pitch,
“Then I remember the first day of practice, I saw this dude throw a ball, I was like ‘yeah, he’s good’, just dropped it right over the corner, a deep one to Moss. And when you got to see that connection as a young player, yeah, it was f***ing crazy.”
Edelman opens up on struggles to earn Brady’s trust with the Patriots
During his time in college, Edelman played quarterback. When the Patriots selected him in the 2009 draft, they insisted that he play wide receiver rather than QB. The 37-year-old was under a great deal of pressure and confused about his responsibility,
“First pass ever from Tom. They put in a package with four receivers, a four-wide group, and they gave me a play. This was, like, I never played receiver, but they created a package for me, and they’re like, ‘Alright, Edelman, get in.’
In his first practice with Tom, he got yelled at by the former quarterback after failing to catch the ball he threw. Then he saw an unexpected and bold face of TB12 which slammed him so deeply that led Edelman to cry after the practice session,
“I run, like, a hook route, and Tom darts it on me. And I tried to run before I had it because I wanted to do something with it. I dropped the ball. He goes, ‘Catch the f**king ball, Julien!’ I went home and cried. I felt pretty shitty for four days. It took me so long to earn his trust after that, took me like three years to earn his trust back.”
The receiver put his first experience with Brady’s way of life behind him and went on to construct an incredible career as one of the greatest playoff receivers ever with three Super Bowl victories and being a one-time MVP.
The beginning did not go as planned, but the conclusion exceeded Julians’ expectations. What a career! What a story!
