Eye-popping Eduardo Camavinga release clause in new Real Madrid contract leaves fans stunned: ‘finances in football is outrageous’

Soccer is a game of finances as well, with player transfers and contracts being heavy business. Often, we see big amounts of money in the equation, which surprises us from time to time. Eduardo Camavinga is the latest to join this equation, as he has signed a new contract at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid made him sign a new long-term contract, both to reflect his contributions on the pitch and to repel interest from any other clubs. And a clause in the player’s contract has sent the soccer community into a frenzy.

Eduardo Camavinga signs new Real Madrid contract

Eduardo Camavinga and Real Madrid agreed on a new contract, which will run until 2029, overshadowing the previous one, which was until 2029. While undisclosed, he will also have an improved salary. The news comes after Madrid already tied down Brazilian duo Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr. to new contracts, with Eder Militao next in line.

Camavinga had joined in 2021 from Rennes for a fee of £27 million. Since then, he has made 114 appearances and has already started eight games out of the 12 they have played. He was crucial to the six trophies they have won since he joined, including the Champions League in 2022. His performances for the club no doubt earned him the new bumper contract.

But it was also to keep any rival clubs from trying to snatch him up. To make sure he does not leave the club, they included a release clause of one billion euros. This basically makes it impossible for any club to sign him unless negotiated by Real Madrid.

The huge release clause has surprised fans with how much money the clubs deal in. They can’t believe that such a clause can even exist.

Reasons for release clause in Spain

However, there is a simple explanation for these types of clauses. Camavinga isn’t the first player to have such a huge clause. In fact, rivals Barcelona have used this clause on several players like Pedri and Gavi, and it even exists in youngster Lamine Yamal’s contract.

The simple reason is that clubs in Spain are bound by rules to include a release clause in their players’ contracts. This is mainly to give players’ more say in their contracts, and to allow them to leave easily if wanted.

Barcelona, however, saw what can happen with a low release clause. The Blaugranas once had Neymar Jr., who was expected to be the next big thing. But he had a release clause worth €222 million, which was activated in 2017 by Paris Saint-Germain.

This incident was enough to put both Barcelona and Real Madrid cautious about future repetitions, and to make sure it never happened again, they have continuously put in high and mostly impossible release clauses. Because of such huge money involved, PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe’s dream move to Real Madrid is yet to materialize as well.
