Compared to 2022, the 2023 season has thus far fared to be further disappointment for the Tifosi. In 2022, the car was competitive enough to fight for wins and podiums. But in 2023, Charles Leclerc, who’d finished P2 in 2022 is currently sat at P5.
Even apart from a drop in performance, other problems have arisen at Ferrari. Throughout this season, there has been speculation on poor relations developing between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc due to numerous radio messages giving the impression of a strained relationship at the centre of the Tifosi’s hopes. However, Leclerc has recently spoken up on the matter, with the aim of clearing the air regarding the wide-scale speculation.
Charles Leclerc sheds light on his relationship with Carlos Sainz
There have been numerous incidents this season via radio messages which point to a strained relationship between the Ferrari pair. At Australia, Leclerc expressed his distaste for not getting a tow from Sainz. Later, at the British GP, the two had a subtle-but-not-really squabble on the radio over track position.
Incidents like these have added fuel to the fiery theory of drama in the Ferrari garage. However, Leclerc sought to clarify this impression among the F1 community, claiming it to be “blown out of proportion.” In an interview with Motosport.com, he says:
“It’s blown out of proportion, I think, with Carlos. We have a great relationship. Outside the car, we know how to work together, and we get on really well together because we share lots of interests.”
Speaking about the importance of competitiveness, he added, “In the end, within the team, we know that we have a good relationship and we are working towards the same goals.”
Ferrari has reassured fans worried about the pair’s relationship through this, but concerns surrounding Ferrari’s overall performance has remained unaddressed, until now.
Charles Leclerc shares Ferrari’s new objectives for 2023
Leclerc recently admitted that Ferrari need to “reset” their ambitions for 2023 and opt for a more realistic approach to the second half of the season. Coming off a stronger 2022 season, Ferrari have had to abandon their hopes for a title in 2023 after dropping behind Mercedes and Aston Martin in the standings.
Speaking to Motorsport, Leclerc states, “The realistic goal for the second half of the season is to become the strongest team behind Red Bull. At the same time, we are trying to close the gap.”
He continues, “The most realistic goal is to finish ahead of McLaren, Aston Martin and Mercedes in the standings,”
He goes on to explain that Ferrari have switched their priority to 2024 car development and closing the gap to Red Bull.
