Fans pelt Chris Jericho with “Please Retire” chants at AEW Dynasty

Chris Jericho, for years, has been a master of working the crowd. In his four-decade-spanning career, the Fozzy member had multiple heel runs and is playing his latest villainous role in a story against the former FTW Champion, Hook.

Before the word “former” shocks you, it is worth noting that Chris Jericho is the new FTW Champion after beating Hook for the title Sunday night at AEW Dynasty. Jericho became the fifth person to win the title inaugurated in 2020, but the crowd wasn’t having any of it.

Throughout the match, the master of the Judas effect was pelted with chants from the St. Louis crowd. The chants were far from welcoming ones as they included, “Go Home Jericho, Go Home,” “Fozzy Sucks,” and “Please Retire” cries from the live attendance.

Despite being a crowd favorite for years for his in-ring charisma and his generous acts outside of it, the recent hostile reception received by Jericho has rather deeper roots than one might assume.

Reason behind Chris Jericho getting heat from fans

Since the first day of AEW, Chris Jericho has been with the company, tasked with major backstage roles. The six-time world champion was quite successful in those duties, but things got messy after the CM Punk incident at AEW All In last year.

Jericho, since then, has beefed with CM Punk’s lawyer online by bragging about his status above any NDAs (non-disclosure agreement). The trouble didn’t stop there, as the NDA comment sparked massive criticism from the wrestling community and a cat was let out of the bag amid all this. Allegations surfaced about the 53-year-old, accusing him of indecent behavior backstage with a female performer, Kylie Rae.

Though nothing has been proved against the “Lionheart”, the heat from the crowd is yet to die down. Despite being in his twilight years, Jericho still commands a reasonable amount of TV time at the expense of the younger talents and beating Hook for the title has been negativity received by the majority of the fans. But surely the story between “The Learning Tree” and Hook is far from finished and the crowd will be more than ready to throw some more chants in the way of Chris Jericho.
