UFC 300, the highly anticipated PPV event of the promotion, lacked a main event until today. Despite the absence of an official main event, the promotion had already assembled a stacked card, with Dana White even stating that every fight on the card could be a PPV or Fight Night main event.
Fans speculated potential headliners, including Conor McGregor versus Michael Chandler, Israel Adesanya versus Dricus du Plessis, or Izzy versus Alex Pereira. However, the UFC announced an unexpected main event, and fans are expressing their discontent.
UFC 300 main event: Alex Pereira vs Jamahal Hill
The UFC announced via its official social media channels that the UFC 300 main event is a light heavyweight title bout between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill. Pereira’s name was already circulating as a potential fighter to headline UFC 300, but Hill was unlikely to headline the UFC PPV.
Hill, the former light heavyweight champion, had to vacate the title after he ruptured his achilles whilst playing basketball. Pereira won the vacant title at UFC 295 with a second-round knockout victory over Jiri Prochazka. Incidentally, Prochazka first vacated the title after a shoulder injury before Hill won by defeating Glover Teixeira.
Pereira has rapidly emerged as one of the UFC’s major stars, securing titles in two divisions with only a handful of fights. His star power was evident at UFC 295 in Madison Square Garden, where he received the loudest cheers from the crowd, including fighters and celebrities like Donald Trump, the former US President.
Hill, the first Dana White Contender Series alumnus to win a UFC title (the second being Sean O’Malley), shares Pereira’s reputation for knockout abilities. Despite fans’ reservations about the matchup, a spectacular finish is anticipated at UFC 300.
Fans outraged with Dana White’s decision on UFC 300 main event
Even though the UFC 300 main event fight between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill will most likely end in a finish, the fight fans are enraged about the fight headlining the PPV. They do not have a problem with Pereira headlining the PPV but the involvement of Hill is what caused the dissatisfaction.
Fight fans made their outrage public on social media. “TERRIBLE,” commented one fan. “The MMA community to Dana white,” another fan captioned a video that showed a Dana White look-alike beaten up by a group of people at a railway station.
“It’s official 299>300,” commented another fan who felt that UFC 299, headlined by Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera is a superiorly stacked card than UFC 300. Like the coveted PPV, UFC 299 is also highly stacked, and the fan comment did hold some truth.
“We were waiting this long for a Jamahal hill fight😭”, another fan commented who made known their disregard for Jamahal Hill. Dana White and the UFC hyped up the event and fans did not expect Hill to be heading the PPV.
