Manchester United have found themselves caught in another round of off-field problems just a few days after letting Mason Greenwood leave on loan to La Liga side Getafe. It’s been a rocky start to the season for Manchester United. They currently sit 11th on the Premier League table with six points out of a possible 12.
Nonetheless, it’s not United’s current form that’s a concern for the fans now. Antony has been caught in the crosshairs of a police investigation involving his ex-girlfriend, who accused him of domestic abuse, similar to what Mason Greenwood was arrested for in 2022.
Similarities between Mason Greenwood and Antony’s criminal allegations
United may have handled Mason Greenwood’s temporary departure from the club smartly, but they’ve been forced to acknowledge a similar situation after it came to light that Antony’s girlfriend accused the Brazilian of domestic abuse, leading to the former Ajax man being dropped from the Brazilian national team to play in the next rounds of international games.
Mason Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after his girlfriend, Harriet Robson, showed disturbing images and videos of herself as a victim of domestic violence, and the United youngster became the subject of an intense investigation by the Greater Manchester Police. The former United academy player was charged with assault and suspended by the club as the investigation took months to conclude. Eventually, the charges against Greenwood were dropped, and he subsequently announced he had become a parent with the same girlfriend who had accused him of domestic abuse.
Antony has found himself in a similar situation after his ex-girlfriend reported the Brazilian international to the authorities for alleged domestic abuse. Antony has maintained his innocence and released a statement on Monday to deny any wrongdoing and pledge his commitment to the local authorities, but this has caused yet another unwanted media circus for Manchester United. Will it ever go away?
Manchester United’s statement regarding Antony’s future
Manchester United have released an official statement regarding Antony and his situation but failed to address anything about the Brazilian’s future at the club. “Man United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the Police are conducting enquiries. Pending further information, the club will be making no further comment. As a club, we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact of these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse,” the statement read.
It’s yet to be confirmed if Antony will return to the fold after the international break, but more information is expected to unfold as new developments on the matter are made public.
