Fernando Alonso graciously credits Sergio Perez for ‘Action of the Year’ victory amid Lewis Hamilton’s bold Aston Martin take

Fernando Alonso’s sensational racing was arguably one of the biggest highlights of 2023, after Max Verstappen’s cutthroat dominance. Fernando made a switch to Aston Martin in 2023 and his latest move paid off incredibly well for him. The Spaniard turned many heads throughout his year and made his fans rejoice with excitement every time he raced in the AMR23.

Fernando Alonso has recently announced that he won’t be retiring from Formula 1 yet and what’s more incredible is that Formula 1 recognizes his talent equally. He got awarded for winning against Sergio Perez this year by a tiny margin, a move which he was highly appraised for, even by Red Bull principal.

Alonso shares limelight with Perez

Fernando Alonso was awarded the FIA ‘Action of the Year’ award for his breathtaking triumph over Sergio Perez during the Brazilian GP. It was an incredible last-lap battle between two quality drivers and masters of defense but it was Alonso who had the final laugh. Alonso and Perez raced each other to the finish line after a late overtake by the Spaniard and Fernando Alonso managed to get the edge over him by only 0.053 seconds.

Fernando Alonso couldn’t attend the award ceremony, unfortunately but he had a heartfelt message for everyone. In true sportsmanlike fashion, Alonso congratulated fellow racing driver Sergio Perez for the amazing moment they shared on track. He thanked everyone for the prize and his big smile was an indication of his satisfaction at Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso then went on to talk about the quality of racing and he was confident that this moment would set an example for future generations of racers to enjoy clean racing without any contact and wheel-to-wheel action.

It was an incredible moment for the entire community that savored their battle for the podium and couldn’t take their eyes away from either of the drivers.

Hamilton voices displeasure over car copying

Aston Martin created an uproar in Formula 1 with their season, in their third year at the pinnacle of motorsports. They were able to get over the earlier disappointments and build an incredibly competitive car that was able to fully utilize the talents of Fernando Alonso. But, Aston Martin was riddled with controversy because their car was highly similar to the Red Bulls. This invoked mixed reactions from both fans and drivers.

Lewis Hamilton, too, couldn’t hold back from expressing his displeasure over the similarity of the two cars and he discouraged copying the designs of other cars.

“The thing is, with the timeline you have, and the limited resources you have, you can’t just throw it away and start from scratch. You can’t copy a car and start from that. Look at the Astons. They tried to copy a car and it wasn’t the same. It is not as easy as that. You have to try and take the good parts and through trial and error just try to add other parts.”

Lewis Hamilton may have had an unpleasant year but it seems like his wishes may come true in 2024 with the Mercedes W15. Will Mercedes finally be able to bounce back with their new car for 2024? Make sure to tell us what you think in the comments section.
