Footage resurfaces showing Rex Chapman trash-talking Jordan

Rex Chapman, despite lacking individual accolades or championships, is remembered for his flashy and bold style of play, especially in his notable encounter with Michael Jordan. Despite the age gap, a friendship developed between the two due to sharing the same agent, and Jordan even attempted to recruit Chapman for UNC before entering the NBA.

While Jordan typically dominated their matchups, there was one memorable night when the tables turned.

Recently a footage showing Rex Chapman trash-talking Michael Jordan has resurfaced on the internet that has since gone viral

The incident dates back to February 23, 1996, when the Bulls faced the Heat in Miami. The Bulls, an impressive team with a 48-5 record at the time, were heavy favorites against the below-average Heat with a 24-29 record. However, the game took an unexpected turn, largely thanks to Rex Chapman.

The Heat’s confidence played a crucial role on this particular night, as Chapman started the game with a bang, scoring 10 points early. Rex was on fire, prompting MJ to personally take on the challenge of defending him, applying full-court pressure.

One might assume this would halt Rex’s hot streak, but even Jordan couldn’t find a solution. Chapman continued to dominate the Bulls, with MJ pressuring him relentlessly. It became so challenging for MJ that Phil Jackson made a surprising move: he switched Jordan off Chapman, assigning Steve Kerr to guard him. This decision likely dealt a blow to MJ’s ego, as Chapman concluded the first half with 24 points, including 6 three-pointers.

In the second half, with the Bulls trailing by 22, Jordan attempted to lead a comeback. However, a hard foul by Chapman led to a verbal exchange between the two. While Rex played down the incident in later interviews, rumors were circulating on social media that he had confidently challenged Jordan, saying something like, ‘You can’t guard me! Get out of my face. You better switch off.’

Rex Chapman’s boldness stood out, considering Jordan’s reputation for dominating opponents, especially those who provoked him. However, on that particular night, it was Chapman’s time to shine. He finished the game with 39 points, including nine three-pointers, leading the Heat to a convincing victory over the Bulls, one of only 10 losses Chicago had that season. Jordan, despite scoring 31 points, was overshadowed by Chapman’s outstanding individual performance.

Jordan’s trash-talking prowess

Michael Jordan was renowned for his fearless trash-talking, sparing no one from opponents to teammates and even the President of the United States. His ability to get inside heads became a hallmark of his career. Here are some standout moments of Michael Jordan’s epic trash-talking.

During team scrimmages in 1993, Jordan, defending teammate Rodney McCray, took trash talk to another level. Jordan reportedly screamed, “You’re a loser! You’ve always been a loser!” directly at McCray. Shaquille O’Neal recalled a game with the Orlando Magic when Jordan precisely detailed his next move to Nick Anderson in trash-talks, executed it flawlessly, and coolly looked at Anderson afterward.

In a 1991 game against the Denver Nuggets, Jordan, at the free-throw line, engaged in banter with Dikembe Mutombo. After Mutombo trash-talked him, Jordan responded by closing his eyes and sinking the second free throw, saying, “This one’s for you.” In a memorable 1995 game against the Vancouver Grizzlies, Darrick Martin’s trash talk spurred Jordan into action, scoring 19 of his 29 points in the final six minutes for a Bulls victory.

Michael Jordan has surely been a consistent trash-talker, but his performance on the court was what overpowered his opponents in terms of play. What are your thoughts on MJ’s notorious history of trash-talking? Share with us below in the comments.
