Former Champion sides with the Rock instead of Cody Rhodes for WrestleMania 40 match against Roman Reigns

Cody Rhodes was believed to face Roman Reigns for the WWE Undisputed Championship at Wrestlemania 40, but after Rock’s return to WWE, the odds has been changed. Many WWE superstars and Hall of Famers gave their prediction and ideas for the main event of Wrestlemania.

Recently, the prediction list added another entry as a former WWE Champion chose The Rock over Cody Rhodes as the opponent for Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 40.

Former champion wants the Rock vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40

In a recent interview in the Busted Open Radio, the 3 time WWE Champion Mickie James picked The Rock to headline the Wrestlemania 40 for the WWE Undisputed Championship against Roman Reigns.

James said, “You know, I love Cody. He’s my friend, he’s my brother, and I’m excited to see him shine. He’s freaking killing , but if I have the option to see, if I had the opportunity to watch Roman and Cody again at WrestleMania or Roman and Rock for the first time ever at WrestleMania, you best believe I’m looking for Roman and Rock.”

James is married to WWE’s Nick Aldis and she recently reacted to a promo of CM Punk, when Punk mentioned her name on a RAW episode. James was in WWE for more than 10 years but was released from WWE in 2021. Later she went to Impact wrestling where she won the Knockout Champion.

Plan for Roman Reigns’ Royal Rumble match changed

On the last episode of Smackdown, Nick Aldis made a shocking announcement by booking a Fatal Four-Way match for the WWE Undisputed Championship at the Royal Rumble. Aldis made the announcement after Roman Reigns interfered in the number 1 contender match and brutally attacked LA Knight.

Reigns also had a heated exchange with Randy Orton, telling him to quit. Dave Meltzer reported that WWE changed the original Reigns-Orton plan for the Royal Rumble because the company didn’t want to beat Orton so soon after his return at Survivor Series less than two months ago.

Dave Meltzer, on speaking in the Wrestling Observer Radio, reported that the fatal four way match was not the original plan for Royal Rumble. He said, “The original idea was Roman and Randy Orton for the Rumble. Essentially there were parties involved who did not want to beat Randy Orton this early and just felt that there’s money to be made with Randy Orton and Roman in a program at some point but it’s too soon to do it.”

He claimed that Randy Orton vs Roman Reigns was the original plan for the Royal Rumble, but WWE changed the plan as they did not want Orton to lose the match. Orton made his return to WWE at Survivor Series after an 18-month break, and WWE doesn’t want to spoil his return by having him pinned by Roman.

With all three superstars seeking revenge against Reigns, the announcement of the fatal four-way match at the Royal Rumble has increased the excitement among the fans.
