Former SmackDown GM wants Rey Mysterio to turn ‘heel’ following WWE return

Rey Mysterio has been out of action for some time after sustaining an injury during a clash against Santos Escobar. Mysterio confirmed that he suffered from a torn meniscus in his right knee and later underwent surgery to repair the tear.

A short while ago, the master of the 619 shocked Santos Escobar after making a surprising comeback during his Street Fight match against Carlito. Former WWE SmackDown GM Teddy Long shared his view on seeing Rey turn into a heel character in the aftermath of his long injury.

Teddy Long claims Rey Mysterio must turn heel

Former WWE Friday Night SmackDown General Manager, Teddy Long recently appeared on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge. During the session, Long shared his opinion on several ongoing WWE storylines and one of his concerns involved Rey Mysetrio’s future. After Dominik Mysterio betrayed his father to join the ‘Judgement Day,’ Rey joined hands with LWO.

However, the 49-year-old athlete had to go on a hiatus due to suffering an injury. During an interview with K100 with Konnan and Disco Inferno, he said, “Just wear and tear. This time, it was my right knee. I’ve never had any injuries on my right knee since 97 when I had my first surgery in WCW. The left knee kept on breaking down every other year, sometimes a little bit longer. Numerous ACL tears.”

He continued, “The last big surgery I had on my left knee was in 2011. This time, you put in all the years, I’ve been favoring the right knee for the left one and finally, I tore the meniscus on my right knee. It’s six to eight weeks. I’m in week four. I can work on my lower body and strengthen up my hips, my quads, my legs in general so I can resist.”

Now that Mysterio is all healed up, Teddy explained that WWE should make a change to his gimmick. A heel Rey Mysterio will attract fans to this new storyline, which is good for business. If WWE fails to utilize Rey’s full potential, it would be a great loss for the wrestling universe.

Rey Mysterio warned Santos Escobar following WWE return

Rey Mysterio returned in last week’s SmackDown live edition and confronted his former partner turned enemy Santos Escobar. The wrestler was injured during an altercation with ‘El Hijo del Fantasma,’ and during Carlito’s match, Escober used his faction members to win the match.

However, LWO members intervened. As Santos was about to pin Carlito, Rey made his way into the ring. He went on to use his finisher, the 619, giving ‘Caribbean Cool’ the victory.

In an interview backstage with Kayla Braxton, the Hall of Famer promised to get back at Escobar. He said, “This is a solid team. This is family, familia. And there was no way I was gonna leave Carlito alone today. Even though family is always here and present, this is only the beginning to what’s to come for Santos Escobar. I can’t stand this.”
