Andy Murray, the Scottish Braveheart is one of the most fervent tennis players who has overcome numerous major injuries to come back and dominate on the court. In the 18 years of his professional career, injuries and surgeries have held him back from potentially becoming one of the greatest of all time. However, no matter how many snags come by, Murray doesn’t look willing to leave the field just yet.
The Big Three Tennis trio that everyone knows of was actually the Big 4- Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray, until Murray dropped out of this elite gang in 2017 due to physical setbacks. However, he didn’t stop training in an attempt to hopefully someday get back on the court.
To date, the three-time Grand Slam champion never really backed down and still displays supreme athleticism and tennis brilliance in almost every match he appears in. Now at the age of 36, he reflects on his wins and losses.
Andy Murray sheds light on his Wimbledon loss
In the second round of Wimbledon 2023, Muzza played against the Greek stunner Stephanos Tsitsipas. This match was a two-day epic and Andy Murray actually had the upper hand. Although, things changed and Tsitsipas edged out Murray in the five-set thriller (7-6, 6-7, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4). This loss was quite devastating for Andy Murray and left him questioning whether he will come back next year.
In the press conference, he said, “Motivation is obviously a big thing, and continuing having early loses in tournaments like this don’t necessarily help with that”.
That moment from press conference when they told him about that point at 15-30 that was actually in. Heartbreaking to see Andy like this 😢💔 pic.twitter.com/rzUSKqq6mo

Now weeks after this loss, Murray adds, “It’s hard because ultimately, I would say in maybe certain events or certain periods of the year, it’s easier to not ignore the results, but not place too much emphasis on them.”
He explains how losing especially at the Wimbledon is more difficult to digest than usual. The Muzza knows that he is still playing well and the match against Tsitsipas was a close call, but the end results are still disappointing.
Murray shares candid thoughts on competing at the highest level of tennis
At the age of 36, Andy Murray is still competing with some of the top players on the field. Now, he further reflects, “There’s still signs for me there that from a tennis perspective, I can still compete and win against the top players in the world, even though I lost that match. If I’d gone out and lost 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, I played terribly and lost comfortably, the stage of my career that I’m at, maybe I’d start to look at things a bit differently.”
Back in the field at the Citi DC Open after his Wimbledon loss, he stated, “I’m surprised by that sometimes because I know how difficult it is for me physically now. That my game is still able to match up and compete with the best players, yeah, I’m surprised by it”. He understands how much it takes and appreciates his own journey and ability to fight.
To be able to still fight in the professional tennis field after such a strenuous journey takes a lot of physical and mental power. Andy Murray’s decision to keep playing shows his passion and determination and his powerful winners on-court shows why he probably shouldn’t retire just yet.
