Francis Ngannou suffered a setback in his second boxing bout as he was knocked out for the first time in his career against Anthony Joshua. Even though Joshua was a big favorite in the fight, nobody expected him to knock Ngannou out of consciousness, particularly as Ngannou only lost via split decision against Tyson Fury.
Ngannou’s knockout loss shocked the MMA community, and it especially shook Demetrious Johnson, the consensus greatest of all time, as he had a shocking take following the culmination of Knockout Chaos.
Demetrious Johnson’s curious take on Francis Ngannou vs Anthony Joshua
Demetrious Johnson did a live reaction to the Knockout Chaos event and following the brutal loss of Francis Ngannou, Johnson made the statement that Anthony Joshua would be able to replicate his boxing success in MMA against Ngannou.
“Here’s the reason why: because it will just be another striking match…AJ understands his distance, he understands the void. He has better hands than Francis, and he can make Francis whiff and miss,” Johnson explained why he picked the former unified boxing heavyweight champion to prevail over the former UFC heavyweight champion.
“AJ is very athletic, he is smaller, he’s more limber. I think he’ll be able to stuff the shot and be able to give it to Francis,” Johnson further explained his argument as he detailed how Johsua could defeat Ngannou in MMA even if Ngannou incorporated wrestling and clinch game into the equation.
Even though Johnson picked Joshua to defeat Ngannou in MMA, the overwhelming section of the MMA community does not feel the same way. The sentiment is that Ngannou will defeat Joshua quicker in MMA than Joshua defeated Ngannou in boxing.
Ngannou graciously accepted the defeat but apologized to his fans on social media. On the other hand, Joshua was all praise for Ngannou and even urged the Cameroonian fighter to stick to boxing despite the setback.
Francis Ngannou’s next fight confirmed
Before he was knocked out by Anthony Joshua, Ngannou had already made his plans public about the future. He planned to either fight the winner of Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk in boxing or Renan Ferreira, the PFL heavyweight champion, in MMA.
Since he lost the fight to Joshua, fighting the winner of Fury versus Usyk seems out of the question. Ferreira had already called out Ngannou after he defeated Ryan Bader in 21 seconds in the main event of PFL vs Bellator: Champs where Ngannou was in attendance at the event with Mike Tyson.
Fans expected to see a face-off between Ferreira and Ngannou inside the Smartcage but Ngannou left midway through Ferreira’s post-fight speech. Nonetheless, the prospect of the 6 ft 8-inch Ferreira locking horns with the specimen that is Ngannou will get the combat sports community riled up.
Ngannou suffered a brutal knockout against Joshua as he remained unconscious for a minute and medics were required to help Ngannou regain consciousness. As such, Ngannou must take considerable time off before making his debut inside the Smartcage.
Despite the loss to Joshua, Ngannou made a career-best payday of more than $20 million at Knockout Chaos. He had made more than $10 million in his debut at Battle of the Baddest. Nonetheless, his respective opponents, Joshua and Fury made exponentially more.
