Garrett Wilson gets candid about Jets’ offensive struggles in “bizarre” performance against Chargers

With Joe Burrow’s blockbuster contract and Aaron Rodgers trade, the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets were projected to have a successful season this year. But, destiny had a surprise for them- Burrow sustained a calf injury and Rodgers went down for the whole season with a torn Achilles. As a consequence, both teams got embroiled in consecutive defeats.

However, destiny has favored them lately, as both teams got out of their losing streak and picked up three consecutive wins in the last few weeks. While Cincy’s winning streak is going strong, Gang Green’s streak came to an end with their 6-27 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, and wide receiver Garrett Wilson thinks their offense should be held responsible for it.

Garrett Wilson opens up on Jets’ offensive woes

The Chargers possess the NFL’s 31st-ranked pass defense, but the Jets offense failed to capitalize on the opportunity to take advantage of that below-average pass defense by allowing eight sacks while going 3-of-17 on third down. The O-line couldn’t even score a touchdown. Wilson couldn’t digest the terrible performance and vented his frustration about it when asked about the morale of Gang Green’s offense.

“When you play at this level and you play on the offensive side of the ball, if you weren’t angry, I would think something was wrong,” he said via SI.com.

The Jets offense ranked 26th in scoring, something that doesn’t match with a good team. Though the record might be “disappointing,” as Garrett mentioned, the receiver doesn’t think that they lack the potential to bounce back stronger.

“This is disappointing, it definitely messes with your psyche a little bit. But, it’s nothing we can’t handle. We are professionals, we’re gonna push through this and it’s going to be better on the back end but, I’d be lying if I said that we were all content with what we’re doing out on the field.”

Meanwhile, the Jets’ defense ranked sixth in points allowed per game. Though the team might have a headache regarding the failure of the O-line, its D-line surely deserves a loud cheer for the dominating performance as it held Chargers QB Justin Herbert to only 136 yards on 16 of 30 passing yards.

Jets HC Robert Saleh labels Chargers game “bizarre”

Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has been doing his part well in the last few matches, but he lost the charm against the Chargers. On the day when the team’s offense struggled terribly, its signal-caller completed 33 of 49 passes for 263 yards while taking eight sacks. He also fumbled three times and lost two of them.

However, Jets head coach Robert Saleh has always defended the signal-caller and he did so after losing the match as well. The HC said the offense as a whole played poorly and that the blame is not only on Zach, while labeling the contest “bizarre”.

“It’s one of those bizarre games..Every time we had momentum, it was just a self inflicted wound. Was it his best game? Obviously not. Was it his worst game? No, I’m not going to say it was even close to his worst game. The entire offense, obviously, we all could have been better.”

Rod’s substitute has managed to secure just one touchdown pass in his past four outings, and his passing performance against the Chargers saw him average a mere 5.4 yards per attempt. Saleh, the head coach, acknowledged the quarterback’s on-field struggles, including issues with dropped passes and alleged fumbles, although he did highlight Zach’s gradual improvement.
