Shakira announced herself to the world when she recorded and performed her song “Waka Waka” at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The song became famous worldwide, but fame wasn’t the only thing Shakira found from her adventures in Africa. She also found love with Gerard Pique, whose country ended up winning the competition after beating Holland in the final.
Sadly, Shakira and Pique’s romance ended after the pair announced their separation over a year ago. The breakup turned out to be a messy one, with one diss song following the other, one of which won an award at the 2023 Latin Grammy Awards, presented by Sergio Ramos, Pique’s former international teammate.
Sergio Ramos presents Shakira with two prestigious prizes
If anything has been learned from Shakira and Pique’s public breakup, it’s that things can get pretty messy very quickly. Love can quickly turn sour, which has been the case between Shakira and Gerard Pique, whose 11-year relationship came to an end last year after the pair announced their separation despite having two children together.
The breakup spelled the start of a messy period for the pair, who have thrown public digs at each other since the split. Shakira notably released a diss track for the former Barcelona player called ‘BZRP Music Session #53.’
The song won two awards at the Latin Grammy Awards, which took place in Seville, Spain, on Friday night. What shocked many was the fact that one of the awards was presented by Sergio Ramos, who played alongside Pique at the heart of Spain’s defence for many years.
Although there was no awkward interaction between the former Real Madrid captain and his international teammate’s ex-partner, folks on social media have been speculating if Latin Grammy intentionally put this together.
Shakira also recently partnered with Barcelona, her ex-partner’s former club, to open new schools in her native country of Colombia some months ago, eventually posing with the club’s jerseys, which caused quite a stir on social media.
What happened between Gerard Pique and Shakira?
Gerard Pique and Shakira’s love story is proof that love can happen even in the most unexpected places. It is also proof that its ending can be pretty messy, which is what we’ve seen in the past few years between the Colombian superstar and her ex-partner.
There were claims that Pique cheated on Shakira, which led to their breakup, but none of them commented on these claims. A few months after announcing their separation, Shakira decided to publicly talk about why she thought the relationship didn’t work out.
“Oh, this is really hard to talk about personally, especially as this is the first time I’ve ever addressed this situation in an interview. I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all,” the Colombian superstar said.
The singer explained how she put her career on hold to be with Pique as she moved to Barcelona to live with the then-Barcelona defender. “One of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice, and I did it. I put my career in second gear, and I came to Spain to support him so he could play football and win titles, she told Elle.
Shakira has since been involved in a string of relationships since then, including a brief romance with F1 star Lewis Hamilton, which reportedly ended two months ago.
