Getafe manager takes major U-turn after claiming Jude Bellingham influenced Mason Greenwood’s arrival

Getafe’s stocks have jumped since announcing the signing of Mason Greenwood on a season-long loan from Manchester United. The Spanish club snapped up the 21-year-old after the Englishman had gone the last 18 months without football following assault allegations laid against him by his girlfriend.

Charges were dropped, and United decided to let Greenwood continue his career elsewhere, with the youngster joining Getafe. Excitements have risen in Spain following the announcement, with the club manager claiming fellow Englishman Jude Bellingham influenced Greenwood’s move to Spain, a statement he has now backtracked on.

Getafe manager apologizes for wrong claims on Jude Bellingham

Mason Greenwood arrived at Getafe to much fanfare. Having not played football for over a year, the youngster joined the Spanish club on a season-long loan, with many happy to see him back in action. Getafe’s manager Jose Bardalas is more than excited to have Greenwood in his squad, and he claimed Jude Bellingham was one of the people who influenced the youngster to join the La Liga club.

“Greenwood has a friendship with Bellingham, and he recommended that he come to play in the Spanish league,” Bordalas told Marca a few days ago. This did not go down well with Bellingham’s camp, as the new Real Madrid star is trying to avoid distractions. According to The Athletic, Bordalas was made aware of Bellingham’s unhappiness with his comments, making him backtrack on them after Getafe’s 3-2 win over Osasuna yesterday.

“I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding there has been. I said that Mason Greenwood came to Getafe because he had spoken to Bellingham. It has been clarified to me that this was not the case. I apologise. Mason arrived differently. It was our interest, and they offered him to me, and we were very interested. I just wanted to clarify that it was not a bad intention,” Bardalas told The Atheltic in his post-match conference yesterday.

Mason Greenwood’s debut for Getafe

Mason Greenwood played his first football match in over a year yesterday as Getafe cruised to a 3-2 win over Osasuna. The former Manchester United academy star was introduced in the 77th minute of the match, with the game tied at 2-2. The Englishman was received very well by the home fans, who cheered him after being brought on. His blocked shot led to the corner that gave Getafe a lead over their rivals, but the abuse he received from the away fans almost overshadowed his return to the pitch.
