Gina Carano, the former MMA fighter, had made a successful transition to Hollywood but had her acting career come to a halt after her termination from the Disney series The Mandalorian, in which she portrayed the popular character Cara Dune.
Gina Carano announced today via X her decision to file a lawsuit against Lucasfilm and Disney for her controversial dismissal from the popular TV series. Through the lawsuit, she is challenging what she describes as a wrongful termination and she has the support of none other than Elon Musk, the champion of free speech.
Details on Gina Carano’s lawsuit against Disney
Lucasfilm announced the termination of Gina Carano via their official X, formerly Twitter, account. The move was a big surprise, as Carano’s character in The Mandalorian, Cara Dune was well-received as a feminist icon. In the statement, the production company criticized the social media activity of Carano as the reason for the termination of the contract.
Their tweet insinuated that Carano hurt the cultural and religious sentiments of certain communities, which the production company found abhorrent and unacceptable. Nonetheless, Carano defended herself, stating that she was specifically targeted due to her political beliefs, which did not adhere to mainstream Hollywood culture.
Carano was accused of anti-Semitism, racism, and transphobia, among other things, concerning her social media activity. One of the main reasons was the accusation of Carano compared the plight of Republicans in the USA to that of Jews in the Holocaust.
Carano defended herself from these accusations, as she stated that she had never done anything offensive but shared content, quotes, pictures, and memes that were thought-provoking. Moreover, she argued that she was getting indifferent treatment due to her sex.
Elon Musk helps Gina Carano to sue Disney
Gina Carano had not taken any legal action since her departure from the series as she continued her acting career through conservative channels. She appeared in the movies Terror on the Prairie and My Son Hunter in starring roles. The first film also co-starred UFC Hall of Famer Donald Cerrone, while the second was about Joe Biden‘s son Hunter Biden.
Nonetheless, Elon Musk, the tech mogul who owns Tesla, Space X, and X (formerly Twitter), offered to support Carano. Musk had earlier offered to provide legal counsel to anyone facing discrimination due to them using X to invoke their freedom of speech. Carano responded to the call and got a lawyer hired by Musk to investigate the case.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude & thank you to @ElonMusk & @X for giving me an opportunity to bring my case to light”, said Carano in a tweet thanking Elon Musk and X after they gave the go-to to file a lawsuit for the termination of her contract.
This is not the first time that Musk has championed the cause of free speech. He has been extremely critical of the woke liberal policies and has long been criticizing them for the apparent double standards he saw in them.
