Harry Maguire reportedly threatens Manchester United exit amid David Beckham’s encouragement

Harry Maguire hasn’t had the best of times at Manchester United. He became the most expensive defender in the world when United forked out over $80 million to bring him to Old Trafford from Leicester City, a record only recently broken by Jasko Gvardiol’s move to Manchester City. The transfer fee, plus how swiftly United made him the club captain, put Maguire in the spotlight.

Being in the spotlight made him an easy target. He also didn’t help his cause with some shaky performances and constant mistakes at the back. He has since fallen out of favor at United. However, the England international has expressed his frustration and threatened to leave the club if his situation does not improve.

Harry Maguire issues ultimatum to Man Utd

Harry Maguire is growing tired of his situation at Manchester United and may finally consider a move away from the club after rejecting a transfer to West Ham in the summer following a £30 million bid. The England international hasn’t been lucky with regular minutes since Lisandro Martinez joined the club from Ajax last summer.

Maguire now has Raphael Varane, Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and 35-year-old Johnny Evans ahead of him in the pecking order. However, recent injuries to key players like Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Sergio Reguilon have provided Maguire with the chance to impress and improve his situation at the club. Sadly, the lack of regular minutes is taking a toll on the 30-year-old, as he now looks to explore his options in the next transfer window if he keeps sitting on the bench.

“I am not going to sit here all my life and play once a month,” Harry Maguire declared. The simple statement sums up the Englishman’s frustration at club level and how much he’s tired of the lack of minutes at Manchester United.

The player’s mother, Zoe Maguire, took to social media to hit out at her son’s critics last month, pleading with people to understand that footballers are also humans and that constant abuses may adversely affect their mental health.

Beckham’s gesture of support to Maguire

David Beckham showed a class act in the midst of the release of his Netflix documentary series, as he offered Harry Maguire an olive branch. The Manchester United defender has had a rough few months at the club, becoming an easy target for constant social media abuses for his poor performance on the pitch.

“I actually spoke with David about three weeks ago after the Scotland game. He got in touch with me, so it was really nice of him, and I really appreciated that. It meant everything. I’ve spoken throughout my career about David being someone I looked up to and watched when I was a young boy,” Maguire said.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t end up on the right wing scoring and assisting as many goals as he has. But he was a big role model when I was growing up. It shows how classy he is to reach out to and message me. It was something I really appreciated. It was touching,” he concluded.
