Have we seen the last of Patrick Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium? Exploring the future of GEHA field amid Chiefs relocation speculations

The defending champion of the NFL the Kansas City Chiefs now look to be on top of their game after winning their second Lombardi trophy in the last four seasons. Despite the Patrick Mahomes squad’s excellent on-field success, many of the team’s fans are biting their nails worrying about the future of GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Amid the rumor of the franchise’s move to leave Truman Sports Complex in favor of a downtown ballpark, Chiefs President Mark Donovan shared his team’s plan regarding their next venture as they could become Truman’s single tenant following the Royals’ shift.

Chiefs Pres. reveals future plans for Arrowhead Stadium

While speaking to the media at Missouri Western State University on Friday, Donovan said they have three options in hand: 1) building a new stadium at the Truman Sports Complex, 2) building a new stadium at a completely different location, or 3) renovating and upgrading the Arrowhead Stadium,

“We’ve gone through the process and made some progress there. There are still three viable options on the table and we’ve got to do the due diligence on: renovate/upgrade, build new on-site, or build new somewhere else. All three of those options are still part of our dialogue.”

Nevertheless, the Chiefs’ president revealed they are leaning toward the third option,

“I want to be consistent and reiterate something that [Chiefs chairman and CEO] Clark [Hunt] said last time he spoke on this; if everything plays out the way we think it’s going to play out, our preference is to upgrade and renovate the stadium and make GEHA Field at Arrowhead even better.”

The absence of a roof hindered the iconic stadium from hosting Super Bowl

The Chiefs fans were expecting to host the 2015 Super Bowl at their beloved Arrowhead Stadium and Kansas City’s people “voted for and approved a ¾ cent sales tax for improvements to the Truman Sports Complex”.

The NFL was also in favor of the Citians, albeit they threw one major condition. The league asked to build a roof over the stadium to get approval for becoming a Super Bowl host and Citians didn’t agree to the condition, leaving their dreams unfulfilled till now.

KSHB’s reporter Cher Congour said in 2018 he got to know via Mick Shaffer that the absence of the roof is the main hindrance in the way of Kansas City’s hosting a Super Bowl,

“I believe the only thing that can realistically bring a Super Bowl to Kansas City is a rolling roof or a brand-new stadium, which isn’t going to happen for quite some time. The Super Bowl is pretty consistent: it’s either played in the South or in a domed stadium. The one time they strayed from that was a couple years ago, outdoors in New York.”

With the training camp knocking at the door, Mahomes‘ team is expected to focus on grabbing back-to-back Lombardi trophies. Meanwhile, Citian’s dream of being the host of a Super Bowl still remains a question mark.
