Hours after setting NFL record with $210.6 million deal, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes shares emotional message with fans

The deal adjustment of the Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes has been a hot discussion this offseason. The quarterback had urged the Chiefs to pay veterans like Chris Jones, and even provided financial flexibility to the team, but never demanded to make him the highest-paid player of the NFL.

However, it doesn’t mean that the Chiefs had nothing in store for Mahomes, and they displayed how highly they regard their star QB by inking him a blockbuster contract during the regular season. The two-time MVP couldn’t resist sharing his take on social media following the deal.

Patrick Mahomes’ touching words after deal adjustment

In 2020, Mahomes was offered a 10-year, $450 million contract extension from the Chiefs that was the most lucrative contract in sports history back then. However, the landscape of the NFL changed within these three years, and there were larger more lucrative contracts handed out to star signal-callers in the league.

The elite QBs like Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Joe Burrow signed extensions in 2023. Though these players could not surpass the total value of Patrick Mahomes’ contract, they all possess a higher annual average value on their respective deals.

Now, after the deal restructuring, Pat was rest assured that he would not be labeled as an underpaid player anymore. The 28-year-old took to X to share a three-word message to express his gratitude.

“Thank you God!”, he wrote.

The dual threat has led the Chiefs to earn two Super Bowl titles in the last four seasons. With five Pro Bowls, two first-team All-Pro, and two-time MVP honors, he is believed to be the next GOAT of the league following the Patriots and Bucs legend Tom Brady, and hence, he deserves every penny of his new contract.

Mahomes makes NFL history with contract restructure

According to a social media post of Mahomes’ agency Equity Sport on Monday, the veteran and the Chiefs have reached a deal that will see Mahomes bag $208.1 million from 2023 through 2026, and all of it is guaranteed for injury. The source said the agreement is the most lucrative in the history of the league over that timeframe.

By this move, the two-time MVP is set to receive $56.85 million in 2023, out of which he has already got $35 million under the existing deal. He would receive $44.5 million in 2024, $50 million in 2025 as well as $56.76 million in 2026, and the whole deal may rise up to $218.1 million with escalators in the last year.

Nevertheless, the contract will be revised by both parties again after the 2026 season. The QB will not be topping Bengals’ Joe Burrow who makes $55 million per year, albeit his average $52.6 million salary per year is now the second highest in the NFL.
