How did Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister’s three-match ban get overturned following wrongful dismissal by referee?

Alexis Mac Allister was disappointed when he got shown the red against Bournemouth. He must have thought his tackle was moderate, but Mike Dean had a contrary opinion, “He probably doesn’t need to make the challenge. He has caught him on the shin. It’s not a wrong decision by the referee.”

A red card offence means a three-match ban and some fines. Alexis Mac Allister was already prepared to sit out three crucial Premier League games, but Liverpool was not planning on conceding to the FA for a decision they felt was erroneously made.

Was Alexis Mac Allister’s three-match ban revoked?

It was disappointing for  Liverpool when Mac Allister picked up a red card against Bournemouth.  Describing the situation surrounding the red card penalty, Mike Dean, an ex-Premier referee, described the situation quite aptly thus;

“He’s gone in quite high. There’s not a lot of force in the challenge, but he has caught him quite high. It’s just a lazy leg.”

In his post-match interview, Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool boss, expressed his displeasure with the referee’s decision, stating how harsh the decision was.

“I’ve seen it back,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said after the game. “I think the number of times I’ve been asked about it, it’s worth discussing again, which we will probably do.

“Alexis told me he touched him, but not really. No other boxes are ticked if you have a list of points to have a penalty besides contact. If it were a yellow card, it wouldn’t have been overturned, but VAR isn’t overturning it because it’s a red card, and there’s contact.

“The punishment being with ten men for 40 minutes is already punishment itself. I don’t know if we have to talk to the authorities. We saw harsher challenges which were not red cards.”

In the above statement, Jurgen Klopp hinted that they’d try overturning the red card, considering its harshness. Liverpool appealed the decision, and they successfully overturned the red card.

The FA eventually released a statement, “An Independent Regulatory Commission has removed Alexis Mac Allister’s three-match suspension following a claim of wrongful dismissal.”

Why did Alexis Mac Allister receive a red card?

Alexis Mac Allister has been an incredible addition to the Liverpool team since he joined from Brighton. A red card is not exactly a badge of honour but can also express a player’s zest to defend the club.

The match had started out competitively between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield. Bournemouth scored first before Liverpool later netting three goals. Bournemouth was on the verge of leading a counter-attack before Alexis Mac Allister fouled a Bournemouth player. In his attempt to stop Ryan Christie, the 28-year-old Liverpool Midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, showed the studs of his boot as his raised foot caught Ryan Christie’s shin.

The referee, Thomas Brammall, raised his crimson red card as he unapologetically sent Mac Allister off the field of play without any consultation with the VAR officials.

Let us know, what you feel about Mac Allister’s wrongful dismissal or was it just on the referee’s part to send the World Cup winner out?
