After drafting Henry Ruggs with No. 12 in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama, the Las Vegas team owner Mark Davis bragged saying he only wanted the speedy wideout in the draft. He even won an NCAA championship with the Crimson Tide before heading to the NFL.
The 6-foot, 190-pound explosive receiver moonlighted as a deep-threat playmaker for Las Vegas’ offense in his year-and-a-half with the franchise and recorded more receiving yards (469) than in his rookie campaign (452) in just seven games of his sophi season. However, everything turned into a nightmare after the promising star got embroiled in legal battles due to his alleged car crash.
How many years Ex-Raiders WR Henry Ruggs serving sentence in prison?
According to CBS 8 Las Vegas, Ruggs officially got booked on Monday in Nevada’s Department of Corrections to serve a three-to-10-year prison sentence due to a fatal car crash. He is also set to serve anywhere from 1-6 years for reckless driving.
The wide receiver was in his second year when the incident took place. He recorded 50 passes for 921 yards as well as four touchdowns throughout his 20 games in Las Vegas. His 19.5 yards-per-catch average along with 24 catches for 469 yards and two touchdowns marked him as the only second NFL player among pass-catchers with a minimum of 20 receptions.
Why did the Raiders release WR Henry Ruggs? Explained
The Raiders released Henry immediately after his arrest due to being involved in the November 2021 vehicle crash. According to TMZ’s report, he was detained and charged with a DUI following the crash in a residential area west of Las Vegas that caused a girl named Tina Tintor and her dog Max to lose their lives on the spot as their vehicle burst into flames.
The former first-round Draft pick was reportedly driving 156 miles per hour in his Chevrolet Corvette before striking the 23-year-old girl’s Toyota RAV4. His blood-alcohol limit was also twice the legal limit, as per Court TV.
The 24-year-old star was earlier expected to be slapped by the punishment of more than 50 years in jail due to the incident, albeit he pleaded guilty to one felony count of DUI in May 2023 and got a sentence of at least 3 years in prison. He also apologized to the family of Tina in the courtroom,
“To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering my actions on the morning of Nov. 2, 2021, have caused you, your family, and those who knew Ms. Tina and Max. I let my family, my teammates, and those who believed in me down with my actions and hurt so many.”
Ruggs suffered a leg injury in the crash and his girlfriend Je’nai Kilgo-Washington with whom he had a daughter also sustained an arm injury, albeit she didn’t cooperate with prosecutors as a victim of the incident. His incident will undoubtedly serve as a harsh reminder for all the players in the league.
