The Premier League is the most popular domestic league in the world, and although bad refereeing and controversial VAR decisions have dented the league’s reputation in recent years, it’s still every player’s dream league to play in. The league always introduces new rules that help shape up and regulate things amongst the participating clubs, which will now potentially involve a ban on loan deals between associated party clubs, a move that could affect Newcastle United’s transfer plans in the long term.
Premier League clubs to vote on bans of loan deals
Premier League clubs are entering into a vote to temporarily ban clubs backed by the same ownership from loaning players between them, which could put Newcastle’s January transfer plan for Ruben Neves in jeopardy.
The Magpies have lost Sandro Tonali to a temporary betting ban for 10 months and eight months of mandatory rehabilitation to help him combat his betting addiction. Newcastle are now without their second-most expensive signing and are looking to bring in Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal, a Saudi club owned by the country’s Public Investment Fund, which owns Newcastle United as well.
The vote will take place on November 21, and 14 of the 20 clubs must vote the same thing to reach a decision.
With the decision set to potentially harm Newcastle’s January transfer plans, the club must now start exploring other options in case they don’t get Neves in January.
“The current rules and regulations say there is nothing to stop it,” Dan Ashworth, the Director of Football, said. “There is a potential that the various different organizations will look at things across related parties and what you can do to acquire players at a fair market value,” he concluded.
Cause, effect of the potential ban
Premier League clubs are trying to vote to ban loan deals between clubs under the same ownership, albeit temporarily. This deal could affect clubs like Newcastle, who are connected to another big club in a different country. The temporary ban could affect Newcastle’s plan to bring Ruben Neves in on loan in January as a temporary replacement for Sandro Tonali, who is currently serving an eight-month ban.
According to the BBC, the temporary loan ban would only affect incoming loans, as outgoing loans wouldn’t be affected in any way. It will be temporarily put in place until a permanent solution can be agreed upon ahead of the next summer transfer window.
Amidst the loan ban, the Premier League has been in the headlines recently due to controversial refereeing decisions, which recently affected Arsenal in their league game loss against Newcastle last weekend.
