Despite significant investments in squad reinforcements since the new ownership takeover in 2022, Chelsea, the Premier League giants, faced initial struggles this season. Fortunately for the Blues, the efforts of their new manager Mauricio Pochettino are now yielding positive results.
As Chelsea boss, Pochettino called for additional signings in the transfer window. The club has successfully secured Ian Maatsen’s continued stay through a contract extension, followed by his departure on loan. However, there is speculation that a permanent sale may be on the horizon in the summer.
Ian Maatsen signs Chelsea contract extension with £35M release clause
The new year has brought luck to Chelsea, with three victories in their fixtures and five successive wins in the previous five matches across all competitions. Their campaign is getting back on track, highlighted by a recent 1-0 victory over Fulham in the league, courtesy of a penalty from the new addition, Cole Palmer.
In the mix, Ian Maatsen signed a one-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge earlier this month, extending his contract until 2026. Before this agreement, his contract was due to expire in 2025. Since Chelsea secured their investment in the 21-year-old, he has been loaned out until the end of the season.
The new deal suggests his release clause is around £35 million. As the left-back is among those names that the club might potentially put on the market for sale in the summer, he will be spending the rest of the season at Dortmund to increase his market value and in search of regular minutes.
Since arriving at Chelsea in 2018, Ian Maatsen accumulated just 18 first-team appearances for the London side. The U21 Dutch international underwent loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley. During the current campaign under Pochettino, he has primarily featured as a substitute, securing only a single start.
Chelsea loans Ian Maatsen to Borussia Dortmund
Ian Maatsen, currently on loan from Chelsea, made his debut appearance for the Bundesliga outfit. Borussia Dortmund secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Darmstadt on Saturday, and the left-back showcased a solid performance in the black and yellow colors, making an instant impact at the German club.
The 21-year-old was given a start in the first eleven and played the entire 90 minutes on the left side of the defense. Alongside him, another Premier League arrival, the Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho also made his second debut after coming off the bench to set up a goal for Marco Reus.
