The Argentine opened the scoring for his team in the final, scoring a trademark goal from outside the box in the 23rd minute, leading to wild celebrations in the stands as the Argentine made history with his goal. Although Nashville pulled one back in the second half to take the game into penalties, Inter Miami managed to convert all but one of their spot-kicks, winning the Florida-based club their first trophy since their founding.
Lionel Messi gave the fans that paid at least $650 per ticket their money’s worth as he put in a man-of-the-match performance that also earned him the tournament’s MVP and top scorer. The Argentine scored ten goals in seven games in the tournament, putting him at the top of the goalscorer chart, three more than the next-best player.
Lionel Messi becomes the most decorated soccer player of all time
Trophies follow Lionel Messi wherever he goes. Even at PSG, where he was shown tough love, the Argentine lifted two Ligue 1 trophies and the Coupe de France. Messi has levelled with Dani Alves as the most decorated player in football history, having won 44 trophies. Lionel Messi lifted the Leagues Cup with Inter Miami last night, taking his tally to 44, the same number as his former Barcelona teammate Dani Alves.
With Dani Alves not likely to play football again, Messi has all the time in the world to rake up more trophies in the MLS with Inter Miami. Focus will now shift to the MLS, where Inter Miami will look to lift themselves off the bottom of the Eastern Conference table where they currently lie.
