Things didn’t turn out well for Paris Sain-Germain last season, at least not as much as they would have wanted. The Parisians narrowly won the league title everyone expected them to have wrapped up earlier in the season. Although Kylian Mbappe had a great season and an even better World Cup campaign, the same couldn’t be said for the French club.
A team with a front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe should have won the league easily, and, even more importantly, the Champions League as well. However, the club succumbed to a 3-0 loss on aggregate to a Bayern Munich team that had underperformed in the league, eventually resulting in Julian Nagelsmann being sacked.
Mbappe may follow Lionel Messi out of PSG this summer after being unable to agree with the club on a new deal that could keep him beyond next season.
PSG president issues strong warning after Lionel Messi’s exit
PSG have been the Real Madrid of football for the past few years, cherry-picking the best players from the rest of Europe to make their club stronger in the Champions League. The club broke the transfer record to sign Neymar from Barcelona for a world-record fee of £200.5 million in 2017, paying the Brazilian’s full release clause.
PSG would go on to bring Mbappe from Monaco, Messi on a free transfer from Barcelona, Donnarumma from Milan, Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, and Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan to form a super team that could finally bring the club its first Champions League title.
That didn’t turn out well for the French club, as the president now focuses on building a team of young players rather than superstars that would disrupt the squad’s balance. The club has released Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, and the president has now sent a strong warning to his team following Mbappe’s theatrics in the media in the past few weeks.
Speaking to Luis Henrique’s squad in pre-season training to rally his troop, President Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: “It is important to tell you that the manager has the power to do as he pleases. It is he who decides. Altogether, we need to go in the same direction and show pride to play for this club, this shirt, for PSG. This club is bigger than everyone here, even me.”
Kylian Mbappe reportedly leaving PSG
Kylian Mbappe may leave PSG before the transfer window closes, with many mooting him to move to Real Madrid finally, the club he grew up supporting. The Frenchman almost moved to Real Madrid last summer after reportedly giving Florentino Perez his word, but a quick turnaround by PSG tied the 2018 World Cup winner down in the French capital for another season.
Kylian Mbappe has termed PSG a “divisive team”, which may spell his end at the French club.
